The federal and state governments want to get the drastically increasing corona infection numbers under control with massive contact restrictions throughout November.

According to SPIEGEL information, the measures should come into force across Germany from November 2nd and not from November 4th as originally planned in the federal resolution.

Chancellor Angela Merkel has been advising the Prime Minister about tougher measures in the corona crisis since noon.

Drosten and Söder for stricter measures

North Rhine-Westphalia's Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU) had previously spoken of November as the "month of decision" in view of the rising number of new infections.

Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) pleaded for stricter corona measures even before the conference: "Better to be right and right than late and half-hearted," said Söder.

The virologist Christian Drosten also argued in favor of a temporary lockdown.

"If the load becomes too great, then you have to take a break," said the Charité scientist in the episode of the "Coronavirus Update" published by NDR-Info on Tuesday evening.

At the moment the incidence in Germany is still comparatively low.

"If we were to step on the brakes now, it would have a very lasting effect. That would save us a lot of time."

About three weeks - a little more than a quarantine period is needed from the scientist's point of view.

"The incidence is then significantly reduced and is then also reduced in the long term under certain circumstances."

Almost 15,000 new infections in Germany

The health authorities reported 14,964 new corona infections within one day on Wednesday morning - a record since the beginning of the pandemic.

A week ago the number was 7595.

The current values are only partially comparable with the values from the spring, since significantly more tests are now being carried out and more infections are being discovered as a result.
