A dolphin that was attacked by a shark and injured was seen today (Wednesday) by investigators who conducted an observation on the beach of Ashdod.

The dolphin with the bite scars was located and photographed by researchers at the Maurice Kahan Marine Research Station of the Leon Charney School of Marine Sciences at the University of Haifa. "For 20 years I have been studying the dolphin population in Israel. Said Dr. Aviad Sheinin, head of the super-predatory field at the university.

He added that the researchers intend to continue tracking the dolphin population, "in order to understand whether this is an unusual assault event or a new phenomenon."

According to the researchers, if more cases of attack are detected, it may indicate the presence or increase in the number of sharks in the area.

As part of a long-term ecological study of the local dolphin population, researchers from the University of Haifa, in collaboration with the Center for Education and Water Sports in Ashdod, are conducting a routine dolphin survey off the coast of Ashdod.

In November 2019, researchers identified a dolphin tagged in 1359, about three feet long.

When they recognized him again a few weeks ago, they discovered to their surprise jagged scars on the sides of his body.

After delving into the photos they took and even consulting with experts from around the world, they all determined that these were scars that came from a shark attack - and in fact, this is the first documentation in Israel of a live dolphin that was attacked by a shark.

According to Dr. Sheinin, according to the analysis of the scars and species of sharks documented in our area, some researchers estimate that it is an attack by a gray shark, ranging in length from 3-4 meters or a gray six-limbed shark, which can reach a length of about five meters. He stressed that it is not possible to determine with certainty the species of shark that attacks from the shape of the scar

.

"In areas where large sharks such as lizards or tiger sharks live, we see many dolphins with scar marks. Because here in Israel we have not yet identified a single dolphin with scars has led us to think that there are - or almost no - such attacks," Dr. Sheinin explained. The new testimony requires us to examine whether this is an isolated case or a new phenomenon. "
