Former Pampean boxer

Miguel Ángel Castellini

, who was a world champion in the WBA super welterweight category, died this morning at the age of 73, a victim of the coronavirus, after being hospitalized for 10 days in a Buenos Aires hospital.

The former ex-worker remained

hospitalized at the Fernández Hospital

in the City of Buenos Aires, victim of pneumonia caused by the disease, as confirmed by medical sources.

Castellini was born in the city of Santa Rosa on January 26, 1947

, although he began his career in San Miguel de Tucumán, and stood out in national boxing as one of the most convincing figures of Luna Park thanks to his powerful punch that earned him the nickname

"Chloroform"

in the early 1970s.

Castellini conquered the world crown of the category by triumphing against the Spanish José Durán, by points, in Madrid on October 8, 1976 but the title slipped like water through his fingers five months later (March 5, 1977) when losing in Nicaragua to local Eddie Gazo, a corporal in his country's national guard, in his first defense.

In November of the same year in Denmark he faced the Ugandan Ayub Kalule, a rising promise and who became world champion,

losing by technical knockout in the third round, thus culminating his international career

.

At the age of 33, he retired on September 20, 1980, facing for the second time the former world champion Gazo, in a packed Luna Park where he won the fight by technical knockout in the ninth round, giving himself the revenge of that fight that He should never have lost to a small rival.

Castellini, who

had a boxing academy

, made a total of 94 fights, of which he won 74, with 51 knockouts, lost eight and tied 12.

"At 73, the champion Miguel Ángel Castellini, Chloroformo, died of COVID. Thank you for the generosity and advice. A big hug to the family, friends and students," said this morning through the social network Twitter the Vice Minister of Health from the province of Buenos Aires,

Nicolás Kreplak

.
