65% of the beaches in Israel were found to be clean at least 70% of the time in 2020 - according to the "Clean Beach" index of the Ministry of Environmental Protection.

This is a decrease of 2% compared to the results that came up in 2019.

According to the index, from Beit Yanai and to the south, the beaches were found to be cleaner than those from Mikhmoret and to the north, with many of them even receiving a "very clean" rating.

The list of beaches that were found to be the dirtiest according to the same index includes the coastal strip from Mikhmad Tel Gador, which is associated with the Hadera municipality, the coastal strip of the Hof Hacarmel Regional Council from the Habonim Reserve to Neve Yam and the Shikmona promenade of the Haifa municipality.

In the jurisdiction of the Nahariya Municipality is a beach that received a "very dirty" mark - south of the "Ishasvest" beach at the mouth of the Hagaaton River.

Among the beaches in the north that received a "very clean" rating - Achziv Beach of the Asher Regional Council, two beaches of the Kiryat Yam Municipality, Habonim Beach of the Nature and Parks Authority and Dor Beach.

In addition to them, Maagan Michael Beach and Sdot Yam Beach of the Hof Hacarmel Regional Council also received this grade.

The data also show that over the years there has been an improvement in the level of beach cleanliness, with the first clean beach index for October 2020 being found to be the most "clean" since 2012 - with 84.85% of the beaches rated as clean.

According to the Minister of Environmental Protection, Gila Gamliel, due to Corona's limitations, this year her office faced a complex reality, which is also reflected in the level of beach cleanliness.

The ministry says the corona plague has posed a challenge to coastal authorities, who have had to deal with a large amount of bathers during periods when it was possible to reach beaches, and little manpower for waste treatment during closure periods.

However, the ministry notes that the bathing season in 2020 was cleaner than previous years - 2018-2016.

"The transfer of the ministry's budget to the coastal authorities has yielded results, and we will continue to act in any way we can to eradicate the dumping phenomenon on the beaches, which belong to all of us," said Minister Gamliel, acknowledging that the enforcement plan has led to visible results. ".

As part of

a clean beach program

, the ministry's national marine environmental protection unit assists coastal authorities in enforcement actions at beaches during the summer months.

The assistance is provided, among other things, through funding provided by the ministry to the Israel Police, which provides escort of police officers to the PA's beach inspectors, in order to create deterrence against waste offenders.

  • The coastal strip from the Habonim Custody to Neve Yam - Hof Hacarmel Regional Council

The corona posed a greater challenge to the coastal authorities.

This year, the Ministry of Environmental Protection transferred unprecedented assistance of more than ten million shekels to local authorities, which include undeclared beaches.

This is the largest support given so far by the ministry on this issue.

This budget is used by the authorities for cleaning operations on undeclared beaches.

According to various estimates, about eight million tons of plastic are dumped into the seas and oceans each year.

According to the National Marine Waste Monitoring Report for 2019, conducted by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the Institute for Marine Research, about 70% of the waste at sea consists of bags and plastic packaging, while this year disposable masks and gloves were added to the waste at the beaches.

Minister Gamliel called on the public to reduce the use of plastic.

"Even in these challenging days, we must all continue to avoid using disposable utensils, especially in open spaces," she said.

"I wish all of us that next bathing season we will return to routine and return to enjoying the shores of our country as before."

On Friday, October 30, there will be a "cleaning day for the beaches and the great sea" during which cleaning operations will take place along about 100 points on the shores of the Mediterranean - from Rosh Hanikra in the north, to Ashkelon in the south, including the shores of

Thousands of volunteers, environmental activists and citizens are expected to attend the event.

Its purpose is to influence decision-makers in the establishment of marine reserves, a ban on the introduction of disposable vessels to beaches and enforcement.

At the event, the Ministry of Environmental Protection is collaborating with the Mediterranean Coalition, consisting of a long line of bodies and organizations, including the Society for the Protection of Nature, Nature and Parks Authority, Life and Environment, Green, Clear, Equation, Scout Movement and the European Union, Sea of Galilee In Israel, municipalities and authorities along the coast, the Divers Association and various local communities of sea and environment lovers.

"If you want to protect the sea and give a chance to the flora and fauna, you have to give them the optimal conditions," says Michael Raphael, national coordinator of the Coalition of Mediterranean People.

"Scientifically, marine reserves are the only solution we know at the moment, for many problems, including sea pollution from waste. Enforcement and public support are necessary conditions for the establishment of a marine reserve, which will work properly."

According to Pazit Shavid-Shayit, director of communities and urban activities at the Society for the Protection of Nature, "the marine environment is of great importance to humanity and other living things."

Ahead of Beach Cleanup Day, she explained that "scientists estimate that by 2050, the mass of plastic waste in the oceans will be equal, or greater, than the mass of living things. Humanity has polluted the sea and beaches and it is our time to fix it. We believe and hope that this event, despite The current challenging period will be the opening shot, to institutionalize a huge cleaning event, which will be repeated every year from now on. "
