Morocco: prison guard killed by jihadist detainee

A prison guard was kidnapped and then killed by a recently incarcerated inmate for belonging to a "

terrorist cell

", announced Tuesday October 27 the king's prosecutor in Rabat, who ordered a "

careful investigation

".

The inmate of Tiflet prison, about sixty kilometers from Rabat, "

kidnapped an employee in his cell and assaulted him with an iron object

", according to a statement from the prosecutor.

"

A rapid intervention brigade intervened to release the employee, immediately evacuated to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries

", according to the same source.

Three other employees were injured during this intervention.

The general prosecutor's office "

ordered the judicial police to open a careful investigation to determine legal responsibility,

" the statement concluded.

The detainee was part of a cell affiliated with the jihadist group Islamic State (IS) dismantled on September 10 near Rabat.

During his arrest, the anti-terrorist police seized from his home "

chemicals that the members of this cell intended to use to carry out terrorist operations

".

Spared in recent years by violence linked to jihadist groups, Morocco was however the scene at the end of 2018 of an attack against two Scandinavian tourists, beheaded in the name of IS in the High Atlas Mountains (south).

At the end of a very followed trial, the authors were condemned to the death penalty, not applied in Morocco since 1993. Last year, 79 people were arrested in the kingdom for cases of "

terrorism

", according to an official report.
