Older people are better than young adults when they follow the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

(CNN) -

Older Americans are better than young adults at following recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus, according to a new survey.

This discrepancy could explain why COVID-19 infections began to rise in younger people starting in June, according to the team from the Data Foundation, a nonprofit think tank that conducted the survey.

Most Americans report that they are doing what they should, the researchers reported in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

For example, the use of face masks increased from an average of 78% in April to 83% in May, and reached 89% in June, the survey revealed with 6,500 adults over 18 years of age.

The percentage of older adults who reported wearing a mask was up to 14 percentage points higher, by month, than those in the youngest age group.Other behaviors, such as washing hands, physically distancing themselves, and avoiding public or crowded places, decreased slightly or were unchanged on average over time.

For example, the survey found that handwashing use dropped from an average of 93% in April to 91% in May and reached 89% in June.

But at almost every point, adults 60 and older outperformed all other age groups.

The younger people were, the less consistently they followed the guidelines.

“Older adults may be more concerned about COVID-19, due to their increased risk of serious illness compared to younger adults.

Young adults may also be less likely to engage in mitigation behaviors due to social, developmental, and practical factors, ”the researchers wrote.

“Reaching these groups (younger adults and others not currently engaged in mitigation behaviors) through specific channels, trusted leaders, and influential at the national, state, and local levels has the potential to improve the use and effectiveness of critical public health strategies to protect people of all ages by preventing the spread of SARS-CoV-2 ”.
