The police have asked the Ministry of Health for access to the cannabis database, as part of which police officers will be able to check which citizens hold a cannabis license for medical purposes - Walla has learned!

NEWS.

The Ministry of Health initially rejected the request on grounds of privacy, but is now examining an outline that will allow limited access to a database containing information on about 80,000 licensed citizens.

The unusual request was raised about two months ago at a meeting attended by representatives of the police and the Ministry of Health.

During the meeting, the police representative asked to allow police officers access to a database containing, among other things, ID numbers and details about tens of thousands of citizens.

Currently, the police do not have access to the database and a citizen caught with medical cannabis must present a license from the Ministry of Health.

According to the police, the move is intended to facilitate the police and prevent false arrests, since "many citizens" do not carry a license with them.

This, by giving each police officer access to check at the police terminal if a person caught with medical cannabis does indeed hold a medical license.

However, the police could not indicate the extent of the phenomenon.

A source close to the details said that representatives of the Ministry of Health were surprised by the invasive request that was not accompanied by satisfactory explanations.

The Ministry of Health, as stated, initially rejected the police request for fear of invading privacy.

However, since the meeting in the office the request has been reconsidered.

A staff work is currently underway to determine who will gain access to the database and in what way.

At the end of the hearings, the ministry said, the police will have "limited access" to the list of licensees.

The database is managed by the Medical Cannabis Unit (ICRC) headed by Yuval Landshaft. It includes details of about 80,000 citizens licensed to possess and use cannabis for medical purposes.

This is not the first time the police have sought to increase police powers during the Corona period. At the corona meeting, the police asked for a regulation that would allow them to enter homes and private areas without a court order, in order to enforce the corona regulations.

Limited access to the database is being examined.

Ministry of Health response: "In order to prevent unnecessary detention of those who legally use medical cannabis, the Israel Police requested information from the Ministry of Health about cannabis licenses for medical purposes. As a result, the Ministry of Health is currently working on defining the scope of limited access given to Israel Police. "Medical in cannabis. The ministry will determine permissions for limited access to information while maintaining that access to each position will be to the extent necessary to perform the job only. In any case, no confidential medical information will be provided unnecessarily."

The director of the HKSR Landshaft refused to comment on the details. The

police response has not yet been received.
