The General Authority of Al-Zahrawi Hospital in Damascus provides early detection services for breast cancer and all investigative and diagnostic procedures throughout the year through the Breast Diseases Clinic, which was recently provided with a modern mammogram device, according to the Director of the Authority, Dr. Rafael Atallah.
In a statement to the SANA delegate today, Dr. Atallah pointed out that the number of daily visits to the clinic ranges from 25 to 30, indicating that during the awareness month for early detection of breast cancer, the "pink month", which extends over the days of October of each year, the hospital intensifies its awareness activities through The counseling program, which includes providing health instructions for women according to age and health status, developing a chart of risk factors to assess each case and setting up a schedule for review to continue providing early detection services for the presence of any mass or disease that gives an indication of the possibility of a cancerous injury.
Dr. Atallah explained that the early detection services for breast cancer in the hospital include an echocardiogram for women under the age of 40 years and mammograms for those over the age of forty in addition to taking a biopsy of the lump to perform an autopsy. Specialized health services to provide appropriate treatment, pointing out that these services can be provided to women and girls of younger ages in the event of risk factors, most notably the presence of a family history of a previous injury of this type of cancer.
Dr. Atallah emphasized that the occurrence of changes in the shape of the breast or the presence of secretions from the nipple or a mass is not necessarily evidence of a cancerous injury, and this can only be determined through review and follow-up in specialized health centers and hospitals, indicating the importance of breast self-examination as a first step to start investigative procedures Other.
