The FBI arrested 5 Chinese spies who were following US dissidents

Detainees in New York, New Jersey and California are among eight accused of liaising with Chinese authorities and tracking families in the state, with the aim of forcing them to return to their homeland.

One of the defendants is an American private investigator.

Five people were arrested today (Wednesday) in the United States and charged with liaising with Chinese authorities, and following Chinese families in the country, in order to force them to return to their homeland.

The five people arrested today in New York, New Jersey and California are part of eight defendants in the case, with the rest of the defendants apparently remaining in China.

One of them is an American private investigator hired to help spy on the family.

As part of the Chinese operation, which took place between 2016-2019 and was known as "Operation Fox Hunting" or "Operation Sky-Net", attempts were made to intimidate Chinese citizens in foreign countries, with the aim of getting them to return to China and be tried on various charges.

The United States has no extradition agreement with China.

The United States requires that anyone acting on behalf of a foreign country register and notify the required legal entities.

All eight defendants in the case face charges of conspiracy to act as illegal agents of a foreign government.

A spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in the United States did not respond.

"This is the first case of its kind and I think it's significant," said U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, Seth Ducharm.

"What makes this case stand out is that it directly involves the efforts of a foreign power to carry out illegal activity here on United States soil."

The indictment alleges that the group conspired to harass a former Chinese government employee who has lived in New Jersey since 2010, along with his wife and daughter.

The alleged harassment of the family included sending a threatening message stating that "if you are willing to return to China and spend 10 years in prison, your wife and children will be fine. That will be the end of this matter."

The family also received threats on social media, as well as packages that contained recorded video threats.

According to announcements issued by the Chinese government along with Interpol in 2012 and 2014, the name of a former government employee from New Jersey was mentioned as wanted as a fugitive suspect in the embezzlement, abuse of power and bribery.

Three of the defendants - Joe Young, Hungarian Jin and Michael McMahon - were arrested in New York and New Jersey, and will appear in court later.

Two others - Rong Jing and Zheng Kongying - were arrested in California.

Three other defendants - Zhu Feng, Hu Ji and Li Minjun - apparently remained in China.
