These are the best matte lipsticks | CNN

The lower half of your face may be covered by a mask for most of the time you spend outdoors these days, but we are | CNNE Underscored | CNN

The lower half of your face may be covered by a mask for most of your time outdoors these days, but we're here to claim that a good matte lipstick remains an essential classic in any beauty arsenal.

There's the argument, of course, that if you're wearing lipstick, it's even more important than ever to find one that stays on and doesn't transfer to your mask, or is easily wiped off after dining outside.

A quality lipstick is also a way to personalize your work-from-home look and restore some normalcy to what has been, to put it mildly, a very strange year.

Further?

Lipstick is just plain fun to wear.

In a saturated market, it can be difficult to figure out which matte lipsticks are right for you, and which products really live up to their claims of all-day wear, not to mention finding shades you like.

Also keep in mind that some brands tend to change their formulas from time to time, so what was once a less than stellar option may have vastly improved since the last time you tried it.

To find the best, our makeup-obsessed editors put 16 selections to the test.

Ultimately, we settled on five worthwhile highlights.

  • Best Overall Matte Lipstick:

    Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick (Starting at $ 11, originally $ 22; amazon.com)

  • Runner-up:

    Too Faced Melted Matte Liquified Long Wear Matte Lipstick ($ 22; hsn.com and sephora.com)

  • Best Moisturizing Formula:

    Uoma Beauty Badass Icon Matte Lipstick ($ 24; ulta.com)

  • Best Budget

    Pick

    :

    Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick ($ 7.89; amazon.com)

  • Best Budget Runner-up:

    NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream ($ 6.50; amazon.com)

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick ($ 22) has thousands of 5-star ratings online, and it's easy to see why.

True to its name, this product clings to your lips for hours on end, burritos and breakfast sandwiches don't affect it.

It is also surprisingly hydrating for such a superior formula, a combination that is rare to come by.

Too Faced Melted Matte Liquified Long Wear Matte Lipstick ($ 22) lost top honors by just two points (it just didn't have the same staying power as our top overall).

It's a highly pigmented formula that does a great job of staying put, plus it also uses a substance called Volulip (more on that below) for a subtle filling and smoothing effect.

Uoma Beauty Badass Icon Matte Lipstick ($ 24) is basically butter in a tube (but in the least gross way possible) that glides on effortlessly.

It's impossibly hydrating and has beautiful bold pigment, and its staying power is impressive for such a hydrating formula.

Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick ($ 7.89) is a drugstore brand lipstick that you would never guess was priced cheaply based on how incredibly well it holds.

It's also available in 35 colors, including some funky shades like blue and black.

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream ($ 6.50) made many of the beauty products and luxury brands on our test list sweat.

Although not as long-lasting as Maybelline, this matte lipstick offers more in the hydration department, which could be a draw for those prone to dry lips who don't want to break the bank.

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick ($ 11, originally $ 22; amazon.com)

The staying power of Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick, as far as we're concerned, can only be attributed to pure witchcraft.

Earning the highest marks in this category of the 16 lipsticks on our test list, she kept up with even eating and drinking.

If you're looking for a mask-friendly matte lipstick that won't transfer to your fabric, there is no better option, in our opinion, than Stila.

With all long-wear lipsticks, we've historically come to expect to sacrifice ultra-hydrated lips for the ability to stay in place all day.

The moisture level of the Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick, however, impressed us given its superior staying power.

While the best brands for a hydrating lipstick went to Uoma Beauty Badass Icon Matte Lipstick, Stila's formula is still remarkably hydrating, putting vitamin E and avocado oil to work keeping your lips smooth and flake-free.

It glides on shiny and wet but dries quickly to a light matte finish that you will hardly even notice it's on your lips once you've done it.

The product is highly pigmented, you may only need to use one coat.

It's available in 19 varied shades, from nude beige to deep plum to bold red.

The line also includes two shades in a "see-through" formula, for smoother coverage, and a "shimmer" formula available in five colors, to add a little shine to your look;

both promise up to 12 hours of wear, although for the purpose of our tests we tested only the matte formula.

All Stila products are free from animal abuse, as they should be in 2020;

All other beauty companies that are still testing on animals, please take note, but Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick is not vegan, as all shades contain carmine and beeswax.

(With that said, if a vegan ingredient list is a must for, we recommend Fenty Stunna Lip Paint as a comparable long-lasting matte lipstick.)

Maybe nothing in this world is perfect, but when it comes to matte lipsticks, Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick comes awfully close, especially if you're looking for a lightweight, non-dry, highly pigmented formula that will withstand long days of wear. without any evidence that you've eaten a fatty grilled cheese sandwich for lunch or worn a mask for several hours.

Too Faced Melted Matte Liquified Long Wear Matte Lipstick ($ 22; hsn.com)

A little (very little) behind our overall pick, Too Faced Melted Matte Liquified Long Wear Lipstick is another long-lasting formula that surprised us with how hydrating it turned out to be throughout the day.

Like Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick, Too Faced's product also includes vitamin E and avocado oil to help smooth lips, but has the added bonus of subtle filling properties, thanks to Volulip (an extract of plant and peptide-derived substance that works to plump the lips without a stinging effect).

Too Faced's lipstick only scored slightly lower marks for durability;

Although it retained food and drink quite well, we found it transferred a bit to our masks, although we were still impressed by its ability to maintain its pigmentation throughout the day without flaking or drying out.

We found that it stained only minimally after hours of use.

The liquid formula is a little more matte in its application from the beginning (front, for example, the brightest initial application of Stila), and its angled applicator glides on with precision.

However, it does have a slightly sticky feel when applied that fades quickly.

In addition, it is available in 29 shades, from soft pinks and light browns to oranges, a purple black and even green, to suit any look you are looking for.

The brand is totally cruelty free, although the beeswax in the formula of this lipstick means that it is not considered a vegan product.

Too Faced Melted Matte Liquified Long Wear Lipstick is a long-lasting, high-pigmentation formula and is an especially good option if you're someone looking for a product that subtly plumps up your lips.

Uoma Beauty Badass Icon Matte Lipstick ($ 24; ulta.com)

One of the few lipsticks on our test list that deserved literal oohs and aahs from our testers, the Uoma Beauty Badass Icon Matte Lipstick glides like butter, and you'll only need a little bit on your lips to cover them enough with color.

Earning the highest ratings for moisture level, Uoma's formula is infused with mango butter, also known as a boon for dry, damaged lips.

After weeks of wearing matte lipsticks, finishing our tests by trying Uoma lipstick felt like an early Christmas gift.

The trade-off for all that hydration is a staying power that's not quite comparable to our long-time winner and runner-up, but it does a good job too.

After a breakfast of yogurt, granola, and coffee, for example, the shade lingered, but it didn't seem applied the way Stila's lipstick did.

It carried over a bit to our masks too, but for such a pigmented, creamy, and hydrating formula, we didn't consider it a sin.

As one tester attests, "I ate pasta, ran an errand, while wearing my mask, and to my surprise, the color was still on my lips and still maintained full coverage."

There you have it, folks.

Uoma Beauty Badass Icon Matte Lipstick is available in 16 shades ranging from pinks and browns to coral and purple hues.

Bonus: all the colors are named after iconic black women, such as Chaka, Whitney, Coretta, and Funmilayo.

Uoma products are cruelty-free, although this lipstick is not a vegan formula.

This soft, lightweight, and hydrating lipstick is a no-brainer for makeup lovers, especially those with dry lips who want a product that will keep them hydrated even when the weather turns cold and windy, and we think it's worth its $ US price. 24.

Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick ($ 7.89; amazon.com)

Simply put, Maybelline's SuperStay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick is a drugstore product, but you would never know.

This is a really impressive lipstick for such a paltry price.

While it's not necessarily a noticeable dry-out formula, it wasn't one of the most hydrating we tested either, and it does have a slightly sticky feel to apply that lingers.

That said, we didn't find it to be a bad thing - the compensation for pigmented color that lasts through breakfast, lunch, coffees, and glasses over glasses of water our entire workday was worth it.

We also experience little to no transfer to our masks with this product.

Like Stila Stay All Day, Maybelline Liquid Lipstick applies glossy and then dries quickly to a matte finish.

Our only complaint with the application is that it can come out of the tube a bit shady, so you have to rub the applicator on the sides of the tube to remove any excess product.

Rounding out the list of what we appreciate about this product: it's available in 35 shades, including funky shades like blue, black, and a purple-based gray, along with your standard reds, pinks, browns or beiges.

(As a bonus, the lipstick also has a delicious dessert-like scent, reminiscent of chocolate or caramel.)

Unfortunately, Maybelline is not a cruelty-free brand, as it sells its products in China, where animal testing is mandatory for foreign cosmetics.

If supporting a 100% cruelty-free brand is important to you, you'll find a comparable formula in our budget runner-up, NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream, or Milani Amore Lip Creme.

Aside from that caveat, you'll be hard pressed to find a more durable drugstore matte lipstick than this one.

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream ($ 6.50; amazon.com)

If you're looking for a more hydrating matte lipstick (or prefer to stick with cruelty-free products only) and are willing to sacrifice staying power, NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream is a solid choice.

For starters, we found that its applicator tip was smaller than many of the liquid lipsticks on our list, it was the holy grail of applicators.

It doesn't cling to the product excessively, which means you can get a precise application even without a lip liner.

Also, it is not super dry as some permanent formulas can be.

Priced not much higher than that of a latte at Starbucks, we found that NYX smooth matte lip cream held up relatively well throughout the day (among other things said latte), though not nearly to the point of pencil. Maybelline SuperStay lipstick.

For continuous full coverage, you will need to reapply this lipstick after a meal and maybe after wearing a mask for a short time, but (pro tip!) If you spray your lips with a setting spray after applying. the product will help keep the color intact for longer.

However, the lower staying power was offset by a more hydrating formula than Maybelline's SuperStay.

If you're someone prone to dry, chapped lips, you might find this NYX lipstick more up your alley.

We also loved that the lipstick is available in a whopping 36 shades.

NYX is a cruelty-free brand, and while Matte Lip Cream is not vegan, its Metallic Lip Cream formula is.

Other lipsticks we tested

Milani Amore Matte Lip Creme (starting at $ 6.33;

amazon.com

)

Another drugstore product that impressed us with its staying power, Milani Amore Matte Lip Creme came only slightly behind NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in overall points.

(In fact, one of our employees swears by it as a staple in her beauty supply collection.) It got up pretty good for breakfast and coffee, and then a messy grilled cheese for lunch, and it barely got. transferred to our masks.

Where he lost points, however, was in the humidity department.

Liquid lipstick, which can come off a bit gloomy, felt dry at first, but once it dries to a matte finish it is quite light and barely noticeable.

If you are prone to chapped lips, you will want to layer this over a lip balm, especially for all day wear.

Note that if you add lip balm, the product will go from a matte finish to a glossy one (and it will still look flawless).

L'Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Matte Liquid Lipstick (starting at $ 6.69;

amazon.com

)

This lipstick has superior staying power, one of our testers had to scrub her lips with makeup remover to get it off completely, but she lost points in several other categories.

Liquid lipstick has a sticky feel that lingers throughout the day, and it ranked somewhere in the middle in terms of moisture level.

Although it does not dry incredibly, it is not what we would describe as moisturizing, and it can become a bit clumpy and flaky after a few hours of use.

(One of our testers found that using a primer under this product, however, dramatically improved that problem and made the application much smoother.)

Colourpop Lippie Stix ($

7;

ulta.com

)

A hydrating matte lipstick, we loved Colourpop Lippie Stix's pigmentation, although we found its staying power to be average.

(One of our testers noted that after removing the mask upon arrival, the pigment remained bold, but the lipstick had smudged.) Housed in a twisted, narrow tube, this lipstick remains smooth and is fairly easy. to apply with precision, it is perfect to obtain a great Cupid's bow.

It dried a bit after a bit, but at only $ 7 a pop, we still think it's an option worth adding to your collection if you find a shade you love (it's available in 16 of them), and if you prefer one. solid to liquid matte lipstick formula.

MAC Cosmetics Matte Lipstick ($ 19;

nordstrom.com

)

We were fans of the unique velvety texture of MAC Cosmetics Matte Lipstick and its gorgeous iconic shades.

Thirty-seven shades to be exact, plus seven others in her best-selling Retro Matte lipstick line (Ruby Woo, have you ever heard of her?).

While it's not a lip color to stay on all day, it rose quite nicely to a coffee and light breakfast before fading in the middle of the day.

However, after a messy meal, it came out quite remarkably.

Lipstick is relatively hydrating and has good pigment, but if you are prone to drying your lips, this is a product we might recommend applying first to help prevent flaking.

Pat McGrath Mattetrance Lipstick ($ 38;

sephora.com

)

Pat McGrath is an iconic makeup artist (ICYMI, Vogue has named their most influential makeup artist in fashion), and so unsurprisingly, her high-end cosmetics line comes with high-price tags.

We were impressed by the magnificent pigmentation of the Mattetrance lipstick, which looks flawless when applied;

color profitability is stellar.

It also has a light, moisturizing, and creamy formula that glides directly onto the lips (and a very pretty packaging to start with).

Lipstick missed major points, however, for its lack of staying power;

it transferred to our masks and came off more easily than we would have expected after a meal, especially considering it was the most expensive product in our test pool.

Fenty Beauty Stunna Lip Paint ($ 25;

sephora.com

)

There's a reason "paint" is in the name of this product: applying this super pigmented lip color really feels like you're bringing a brush to your lips, and it's so satisfying.

More square than curved, the applicator has an unusual shape, which some of us found to be a detriment to precise nail application.

However, add a matching lip liner to the mix, and the issue will likely be moot.

We appreciate the staying power of Fenty Stunna Lip Paint - it basically lasts all day, but does transfer slightly - and it's so pigmented, in fact, that when we removed it, one of our testers found that it temporarily smudged her fingers (which, although slightly annoying, we couldn't help but find it impressive).

You will definitely need a cotton ball and some micellar water to remove this product;

makeup wipes just won't do.

We didn't find it as hydrating as some of the other lipsticks in our test pool, and we wish it came in more than nine shades, but RiRi & Co. largely came to this product, and if you're looking for a bold lip color and stay all day that is both cruelty free and vegan, this is the one for you.

Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor (starting at $ 4;

amazon.com

)

A super hydrating formula (which had the advantage of a delicious scent), Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor missed major points for its lack of staying power - it comes off almost instantly after eating or drinking, and rubs off easily into our masks.

Similar to more of a gloss than a matte lipstick, this is a good option if you are looking for subtle color in a nourishing formula for your work-from-home look.

The applicator may be a bit shady, but otherwise it glides on straight and feels smooth and doesn't dry out.

However, since a cup of coffee didn't last for us, if you're looking for a long-lasting drugstore lipstick, you'll want to choose another option.

Fenty Beauty Mattemoiselle Plush Lipstick ($ 12.50, originally $ 18;

sephora.com

)

The second product we tested in the Fenty Beauty line, Mattemoiselle Plush Lipstick surprised us with how smoothly it applied - it's smooth and hydrating, and in a twisted, narrow tube, it's easy to apply to lips with precision. .

While this is not a lasting lipstick and won't last until a meal, it's a lovely, beautifully pigmented option if you're okay with reapplying often.

Nars Velvet Matte Lipstick ($ 27;

sephora.com

)

We loved that the pencil design of this matte lipstick meant you didn't need a separate lip liner to ensure precise application, but unfortunately that's all we loved about this product.

Its lack of pigmentation meant that we needed to apply it multiple times for a more prominent color, and even then it was quite subtle.

Also, its lack of staying power was disappointing (we're usually big fans of Nars cosmetics!), Particularly for its high price;

We found it rubbed with just a swipe of the finger.

Yves Saint Laurent Tatouage Couture Liquid Matte Lip Stain (starting at $ 37;

macys.com

)

YSL Tatouage Couture Liquid Matte Lip Stain comes in stunning packaging that, well, looks like money.

Of course it is: it's YSL.

While it is quite hydrating, the glossy formula is a joy to apply, the staying power and pigmentation were not on the list of strengths for this product.

More of a sheer stain than matte lipstick, it's not long-lasting, but it looks quite lovely while it's there.

We also appreciated the unique applicator, which made it easy to apply with precision.

It stayed longer than various stains we've used in the past, but it's not a lip color that we would consider long wear;

you will need to reapply after a meal.

However, if you have the money to spare and are looking for a more subtle and pure color in high-end packaging, it sure looks pretty.

Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick ($ 34;

sephora.com

)

With a glamorous rose gold container and the lingering scent of dessert as it adorns your lips, you'll feel elegant just by applying Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution lipstick.

It is also a formula that will leave your lips hydrated, similar to the consistency of a lip balm.

Beyond this, however, the product fell short in most other categories.

It took two coats for the color to show on our lips, which transfers easily and is no match for a small meal and a coffee;

comes off almost instantly.

For a product with such a high price tag, we'd expect more staying power or bolder pigment, although if you're looking for a softer color and don't mind long-wearing lipstick, we appreciated how hydrating it was.

Note: The above prices reflect the price at the time of publication of the article.
