Trump reduces the admission of refugees to a record low, including those fled from Cuba and Venezuela

2020-10-28T14:11:47.700Z

The president froze the arrival of these immigrants at the beginning of the pandemic and next year will reduce it even more, leaving many in danger of death or separated from their families.

President Donald Trump has reduced the number of refugees hosted by the United States by more than 80%, which has been displaced by Canada as the country that admits the most people fleeing wars and persecution.

Last fiscal year (which ended in September) the Government set a cap of 18,000 refugees, and this year it will only admit 15,000, as detailed this Tuesday in a memorandum.

It will be the lowest number since the start of the Refugee Admission Program.

In fiscal year 2016, the last under the presidency of Democrat Barack Obama, 85,000 refugees were accepted.

The State Department has also explained that last year 6,000 of the 18,000 places available due to the coronavirus pandemic remained unfilled, which have been added to the positions of this year, so that the total of the last two years amounts only to 27,000.

Trump suspended the admission of new refugees last March as a precautionary measure, he alleged, amid the pandemic.

Some of those who were already halfway through the process were able to continue with their applications.

The document released on Tuesday details that the refugee resettlement program proposed for the following fiscal year includes specific allocations for: 5,000 people who have been persecuted or are afraid of being persecuted for religious reasons;

4,000 Iraqis;

1,000 refugees from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras;

and 5,000 for refugees from Hong Kong, Cuba and Venezuela, among others.

Persons from certain areas of high risk of terrorist presence or control, including Somalia, Syria and Yemen, will not be admitted as refugees, except those "of special humanitarian interest".

Some 1,000 refugees who were ready to travel may not be able to do so now due to the new restrictions, according to Mark Hetfield, president of HIAS, an organization that works on refugee relocation.

Congolese refugee Sophonie Bizimana, who has permanent residence in the United States, has not been able to reunite with his wife and, according to the new guidelines, will not be able to do so.

"My children are here and they cry every night, my wife cries every night in Uganda," Bizimana said.

He does not understand why his wife is not with his family.

"I need her, her children need her," he added.

Stephen Miller, one of Trump's top advisers, said the government wants refugees to settle closer to their countries of origin and work to resolve the crises that made them leave.

“This problem cannot be solved through the relocation program in the United States.

The solution must come from foreign policy, "Miller said in statements to The Associated Press.

Refugees cannot live in any part of the country, but must be placed "in States and localities that have clearly expressed their willingness to receive refugees under the Reception and Placement Program of the Department of State."

Democratic candidate Joe Biden claims he will admit 125,000 refugees per year if he makes it to the White House.
