New documents and documents of Baba Sally that have been unveiled attest to the importance of the Family Court in Morocco.
The late Rabbi Yisrael Abuhatzira, the late Baba Sally, is known to the Israeli public mainly as a Kabbalist and exemplary doer. Public, who served as a religious services man on behalf of the French government.
At the age of 30, Rabbi Yisrael Abuhatzira was appointed head of the tribunal in the Jewish community of Tafilalet and its districts in Morocco, and was a huge halakhic judge and an important halakhic authority among Moroccan Jews.
In one of the letters to Rabbi Baruch Tolidano dated 23 Tammuz 1943, Rabbi Abuhatzira, on behalf of the French government, seeks to complete the process of approving two new writers (secretaries) to the court following the death of the court writer.
According to Rabbi Abuhatzira, the two are inexperienced: "Young people of the day and have not tried to walk in these, in any case they are smart and understanding, and they can easily get used to this craft."
In another document from the Claims Register of the Rabbinical Court in Katzar-Alsoq from 1951, the daily activities of Baba Sally can be seen as a pain in the family court.
The Dayan Rabbi Abuhatzira settles a dispute between a mother and her two sons over the father's inheritance when he writes the verdict in Hebrew and French.
The rabbi rules that the sons will inherit their father, but each of them will feed the mother in turn.
Another letter was sent to Rabbi Yehoshua Birdugo in Meknes, in which Baba Sally asks to know about their custom regarding the Ketubah.
Some of the townspeople from Meknes moved to Arpod, where he served at the time as chief rabbi and the pain of the tribunal, when the law should be in accordance with the custom of the place where the ketubah was written.
Baba Sally does not sign this letter in person, and the letter is signed by his brother, Rabbi Yitzchak Avihatzira, the "Baba Khaki".
