(CNN Spanish) -–

One of the most important traditions in Mexico is the traditional Day of the Dead, considered as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco).

Under the name “Eterna”, a group of singers led by Majo Cornejo, Vórtice Ensamble, Denise Gutiérrez, Sofi Mayen, Sofía and Ramiro Del Real will pay a musical tribute to the peoples who have filled this tradition with mysticism, in an album that will present to the public in a virtual concert this October 30.

Zona Pop CNN spoke with the singer Majo Cornejo about this album and the concert that will be offered, under the production of Ramiro del Real and Felipe Pérez.

Majo Cornejo was the main voice of the Cirque du Soleil show “Luzia”.

“The two are one genius.

The musical ideas and concepts they had in pre-production to understand what they had in mind was just wonderful.

When the project came to me, I couldn't say no, ”says the singer.

A party to welcome the returning souls

“In this concert each of the interpreters will have a participation with a majestic orchestra where we will interpret the songs that were written by Ramiro del Real and Felipe Pérez Santiago.

It will be a very special concert.

Instead of having something sad about the Day of the Dead, we want the audience to feel identified and that it is a joy to receive our dead who return, ”says Cornejo.

The songs that can be heard are dedicated to emblematic places of this tradition, such as Janitzio, Chignahuapan, Xochimilco, Mixquic, La Huasteca Hidalguense, Oaxaca and Pomuch, among others.

Majo sings the song “Son sin fin”, dedicated to the town of San Andrés Mixquic in Mexico City, a place that every year celebrates the most traditional feast of the dead in the Mexican capital.

“The producers showed us the songs and they wanted us to feel identified and give life and heart to each one, to have life.

I interpret the song dedicated to Mixquic and I felt very comfortable interpreting it.

It was a great honor to tell a little about this site ”.

How to maintain traditions such as the Day of the Dead?

Although Mexicans laugh at death, challenge it, pay homage to it, and receive it in their homes, the tradition of setting up an altar to receive souls for a couple of nights - or going to cemeteries to clean the graves of the deceased - is not lost.

“In my case, through the family that inherits the traditions.

In my family, music unites us and thanks to it I feel very connected.

My parents played at various festivals and I accompanied them.

I am a completely different generation and this concert is for all ages.

We can all enjoy and there is no age for traditions, it is to live them ”, says Majo Cornejo.
