U.S. military, intelligence and security officials were briefed last month on the threat posed to Pentagon chiefs on U.S. soil, and not just on their overseas voyages, NBC reported tonight (Thursday) by five U.S. officials directly involved.

Some senior officials said the briefings suggested that the threat, which remained active, could be Iran's retaliation for the assassination of General Qassem Suleimani earlier this year, although the information provided did not indicate an unequivocal link.

According to them, the briefings contained information indicating that the targets were senior Pentagon and military officials involved in the operation to assassinate the Iranian general, and their names appeared on a list compiled by hostile elements.

Unusually, the Defense Minister's visit to the Middle East and South Asia this week was more secretive than usual, which could indicate a possible security threat.

The reporters who accompanied Asper were not allowed to report on his visits to Bahrain or Israel until he left the countries, despite his two-night stay in Bahrain.

The two countries recently signed a standardization agreement mediated by the Trump administration.

The Pentagon did not respond to questions about the report, which was released days before the presidential election, and the CIA and FBI declined to comment, as did the White House.
