These are sanctions on a number of people and entities, including some of whose base of activity is in China.
Officials in Washington told Reuters that this was another move by the Trump administration designed to increase pressure on Tehran, less than a week before the presidential election.
According to the US Treasury Department, sanctions will be imposed on, among others, eight companies engaged in the purchase and sale of Iranian petrochemical products (petroleum products) from TRILIANCE PETROCHEMICAL.
The U.S. Treasury Department began investigating companies working with Trillions as early as September this year.
The investigation revealed that a number of companies, located in Iran, the United Arab Emirates and China, support Trillions' continued involvement in the sale of Iranian petrochemical products.
The investigation also revealed that the "Trillions" tried to hide and obscure its involvement in the sales contracts with Iran.
The sale of petroleum products, such as ethylene and propylene, which are important raw materials for industrial chemicals as well as plastic products, remains a major source of income for the Iranian regime.
According to the U.S. Treasury Department, "This trade is helping to fund Tehran's support for corrupt regimes and terrorist organizations throughout the Middle East."
