An investigation was opened in Aube after the discovery of the corpse of a toothless and mutilated mare, the first case of this type in the department, the Troyes prosecutor's office said on Friday, October 30.

The animal, whose body was discovered Thursday morning in the meadow where it was grazing, in the town of Courtaoult, had one eye gouged out and presented genital mutilation, inflicted "by a knife or a cutter" according to its owner.
The latter lodged a complaint, and samples were taken by the veterinary services.
Since August, acts of mutilation, mainly of horses, have been reported across French territory.
In Arnac-Pompadour (Corrèze), where the French Horse Institute (IFCE) is located, a national listening center responds to “distress” calls from owners.
About 200 investigations were opened.
