The Nice attack, in which three people were stabbed to death in a church by a Tunisian on Thursday, occurred nearly two weeks after the assassination of a college professor in the Paris region, Samuel Paty, beheaded by a Chechen Russian Islamist for showing caricatures of Muhammad in a class on freedom of expression.
President Emmanuel Macron has since promised that France will not give up the freedom to caricature.
His statements have provoked a crisis with the Muslim world, where demonstrations of protest and calls for a boycott of French products are increasing.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has thus posed as a champion in the defense of the Prophet Muhammad, vehemently criticizing the French president.
