Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer commented on the debate about the CDU party congress and the statements of the candidate Friedrich Merz for the first time.
After the decision to postpone the party congress, the economic politician spoke of the fact that "parts of the party establishment" wanted to prevent it and put his rivals Norbert Röttgen and Armin Laschet under pressure (read more here).
Kramp-Karrenbauer had "received a lot of reactions from the federal board, incidentally also supporters of Friedrich Merz, who felt offended in their honor that they were accused of something like that," said the current chairman of RTL / ntv.
"There are currently far too many conspiracy theories going on in Germany for my taste."
Kramp-Karrenbauer "doesn't know anyone" in the party who wants to prevent Merz with all his might.
The CDU has an "open candidate race" that has been "very fair" over the past few months.
"It is important that we keep a cool head and that we stick together in the party," said the CDU chairwoman.
It was "not easy for anyone" to postpone the party conference, said Kramp-Karrenbauer.
However, this shift is "compared to the existential question of many other people, a comparatively manageable question that can still be solved."
Above all, for Kramp-Karrenbauer it is "not a decision criterion which candidate wants which date".
On the question of when exactly the party congress will now take place, Kramp-Karrenbauer said: "The sooner the clarity is there, the better it is. Preferably at a party congress where we can see each other physically."
At a digital party congress one may not have "legal security" for the election of the board.
The postal vote is again "the last resort".
