Confined to their parents, these students who pay rent ... for nothing

“This is the second time that I'm going to pay the rent for my apartment for nothing…” Thomas, 22, a student at Sciences-po, made his decision.

As in March, he will confine himself to his parents, in Béziers (Hérault).

And as in March, he will continue to pay his rent of 650 euros for his 19 m2 studio in the 15th arrondissement of Paris.

“Being alone in my studio was not an option,” he explains.

With my parents, I have space, a garden, I see my parents… ”

Like Thomas, there are several thousand students across France who want to confine themselves to their parents, while Emmanuel Macron announced Thursday evening the closure of universities in favor of distance learning.

On classifieds sites and Facebook groups, especially in Paris, where rents are very expensive and apartments difficult to find, last-minute sublet ads abound.

💸💸 my rent that I have been paying for nothing since March

I'm going to confine myself to my parents, I'm going to pay rent for nothing, I couldn't even enjoy my apartment, but otherwise everything is fine.

Charlotte, 23, did not plan, either, to spend confinement in her 16 m2 that she rents 640 euros, in the 18th arrondissement of Paris.

"It is not possible: it is not well soundproofed with the neighboring apartments, there is no office to work, then we go around quickly ..." she confides.

She will therefore go, too, during the confinement, to her parents' place in Lyon (Rhône).

For Kyane, 19, returning to his parents' place in Nice (Alpes-Maritimes), "that's a bit imposed".

"I am a scholarship holder and therefore I have low prices in the canteen for lunch, but with the closure of universities, the canteens are also closing, and paying for my lunch would have been too heavy," she explains.

She will therefore leave her apartment in the 17th arrondissement on Saturday, but she will continue, with her roommate, to pay her rent of 950 euros.

So much effort to live there only a few weeks: “I found it just before the start of the school year, after almost two months of research!

"

"I don't want to be alone for a month"

At 18, Theo had also struggled to find his studio in Castres (Tarn), where he is taking a BTS in management.

For confinement, he has already planned to stay with his parents, in Toulouse (Haute-Garonne), "even if it is still unclear and I do not know if, as I am in BTS in a high school, I have course or not ”.

“I don't see myself staying alone in my apartment,” he says.

His rent of 360 euros, "it's a real budget, I would prefer to have them in my bank account rather than put them in an apartment in which I will not be", half jokes the student.

In the south of France, again, it is while she is on the train that we exchange with Chloe, 19 years old.

This journalism student in Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône) goes to Grasse (Alpes-Maritimes), where her parents live, to confine herself as she had already done in March.

“I don't want to stay a month alone in my 20 m2 apartment,” she explains.

And the student adds: "It bothers me anyway because I'm going to pay the rent when I won't be there, but hey that's how it is.

"

"The rents are still due"

During a press point organized Thursday, Emmanuelle Wargon, Minister Delegate in charge of Housing, recalled that "rents are still due for housing", specifying that a "device" exists for tenants in difficulty.

All scholarship students will receive financial aid of 150 euros in November.

On the business side, the government is considering a tax credit to reduce rents for those in difficulty.

For these students, the situation is all the more dire because if Emmanuel Macron announced confinement until December 1, it could be extended in the following weeks depending on the health situation.

Universities could also remain closed beyond containment, as had been the first time.

"If he had announced a three-month confinement, I would have let go of my accommodation," says Chloe.

Thomas, he "would have asked himself the question".

Charlotte still regrets not having let go of her apartment during the first confinement.

“I paid two rents for an apartment that I returned as soon as I was able to deconfinement,” recalls the student.

This time around, the young girl hopes that the confinement will last less and that she will lose less money for an apartment in which she will not be.
