Policy mistakes caused a shortage of private car parking spaces

2020-10-30T08:51:05.812Z

To cope with the Central Kowloon Route Project, the Yau Ma Tei Car Park Building will be closed in phases from November and will be demolished next year. The Hong Kong Automobile Association today (30th) stated that although the government provides temporary parking lots, the location is remote and there are not many parking spaces, which makes it difficult to meet the demand for parking spaces in the area. The association criticized that as early as 2006, Hong Kong had faced insufficient parking spaces for private cars, but the problem continued to worsen, resulting in illegal parking. The Automobile Association estimates that the authorities need to add about 260,000 parking spaces to solve the current shortage of parking spaces.

Li Yaopei, president of the Hong Kong Automobile Association, said that the average ratio of private cars to parking spaces in 2019 was 1 to 1.09, and the relevant figure was about 1 to 1.5 compared with 10 years ago, which was significantly worse.

He believes that the authorities should increase the number of parking spaces by about 260,000 so that the ratio of vehicles to parking spaces can be restored to at least 1:1.4. Only then can the current shortage of private car parking spaces be eased.

Chen Hengpin, a member of the DAB Legislative Council, said that the shortage of parking spaces stemmed from government policy errors.

He pointed out that the Hong Kong government had hoped to slow down the growth of vehicles by controlling the number of parking spaces, but in the end the number of private cars still increased sharply.

He also said that although the government plans to revise the parking planning standards, it is estimated that even if the revision is completed, the parking problem may have troubled Hong Kong for at least 10 years.
