In January this year, the Department and the Greening, Landscape and Tree Management Section (Management Section) of the Development Bureau and its tree inspection team inspected the tree on site and confirmed that the tree had withered.

Although there is no immediate danger, there is a potential risk of collapse.

The department immediately provided temporary support to the tree to prevent it from collapsing, and consulted the Yau Tsim Mong District Council for the removal of the tree. No objection was received.

The management team has notified the Urban Forestry Advisory Group’s recommendation to remove the tree. To protect public safety, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department removed the tree today and will arrange to replant a yellow-flowered wind bell on the original site.

A spokesperson for the Leisure and Cultural Services Department reiterated that the department will continue to carefully inspect and care for the trees under its management, and will only consider removing the problematic trees when there are no other feasible improvement plans.

: The

non-rare tree species is just that Hong Kong grows less

According to the information, the tree is classified as a precious or rare species. The tree is 8 meters high. In the Sai Yee Street Garden in Mong Kok, there are three other Shi's bell flowers listed in the "Ancient Trees and Famous Trees".

Zhan Zhiyong, a research chair professor in the Department of Social Sciences (Geography and Environmental Sciences) of the Education University of Hong Kong, known as "Doctor Tree", said that Shi’s bellflower is rarely planted in Hong Kong, but there are many in foreign countries. He believes that this tree is not rare. The tree shape is not outstanding, nor is it an old tree, it is difficult to understand why it was included in the "Book of Ancient and Valuable Trees".

He also pointed out that the tree species can grow to a height of 25 meters, which is about 8 stories high, but if it is planted in a flower trough, it is easy to grow in insufficient space. When the soil volume is insufficient, it is easy to get sick, and a "sub-healthy" state may appear. Weak trees believe that the authorities should give priority to improving soil conditions.
