Virtual image of journalist Javier Valdez asks for justice 3:43
(CNN Spanish) -
In Mexico, the Propuesta Cívica association launched a video this Thursday that virtually recreates the image of journalist Javier Valdez, murdered on May 15, 2017 in Culiacán, Sinaloa, and makes him the protagonist of a message to the President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
«I am not afraid, Mr. President, because they cannot kill me twice.
That is why I have come to speak for the hundreds of journalists who were murdered, disappeared and displaced, ”says Valdez's image in the message.
According to what the association told CNN, the image of the journalist was created using a Russian animation technique.
'Even if they want to shut us up, we keep talking'
In the message, the López Obrador government is required to clarify the crimes of journalists in Mexico, such as the one committed against Javier Valdez.
Also the continuation of investigations to find the whereabouts of other missing communicators in the country.
"A country without truth is a country without democracy, and even if they want to shut us up, we keep talking," says the animated figure of Javier Valdez in the video.
Propuesta Cívica is an organization created in 2011. Since 2019, it launched the #SigamosHablando campaign, with the reactivation of the Twitter accounts of four murdered journalists.
In addition, a decalogue has been launched to the authorities to address impunity and violence against the press.
The director, Sara Mendiola, explained to CNN that Javier Valdez's video is part of this campaign with which they seek to draw the attention of authorities of all levels of government to demand an end to violence against the press in Mexico and stigmatization of the journalistic trade.
The campaign behind the image of Javier Valdez
Griselda Triana, Javier Valdez's widow, told CNN that this call motivated her to authorize the use of the journalist's image for the campaign.
And he said that the only response he expects is the same as that of other families affected by violence against journalists: "end the murders, threats, intimidation and the missing journalists are found."
CNN contacted the Mexican presidency to find out its position on the campaign, but has not received a response so far.
The #SigamosHablando campaign is part of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists.
This day is commemorated on November 2.
According to the organization, since 2000, 135 journalists have been murdered in Mexico for causes related to their work.
Fifteen of them have died during the current administration.
