Today (31st), apart from the annual Halloween, a rare "Blue Moon" will also be staged in the sky.

However, it does not mean that the moon really turns blue, but when there are two full moons in a solar month, the second full moon will be called the "blue moon."

The Observatory pointed out that as part of the night is cloudy, the public may want to enjoy the moon among the clouds.

In addition, the next time the "Blue Moon" will appear again on August 31, 2023; and to meet the full moon on Halloween again, it will take 19 years.

Hong Kong ushered in a full moon on October 1st Mid-Autumn Festival. Today Halloween falls on the 15th lunar month of the lunar calendar, and the full moon will appear in the sky again.

The scientific director of the observatory, Leung Hao-ming, pointed out that the phenomenon of two full moons in a month is called the "blue moon," and the moon does not really turn blue.

Since the moon will set at 5 o'clock in the morning tomorrow (November 1), you can also watch it all night.

He also pointed out that the blue moon appears once every 30 months on average and will appear again on August 31, 2023.

Why is it called the "blue moon" if the full moon appears twice a month?

The Space Museum's explanation of the appearance of the "Blue Moon" is a bit divergent. It is said that the original description in astronomy appeared in a book published in 1937.

In addition, in 1946, the magazine "Sky & Telescope" mistakenly interpreted "Blue Moon" as the second full moon in a solar month.

Due to the popularity and influence of this magazine, this misunderstanding has gradually become the public's perception of "Blue Moon" in the future.

The Space Museum also pointed out that the cycle of lunar phases is 29.5 days. Generally, a full moon appears once in a solar month.

But except for February, each month in the solar calendar has 30 to 31 days, so as long as the full moon appears at the beginning of the month, it is possible that the full moon will appear again at the end of the month.

And to happen to meet the full moon on Halloween again, it will take 19 years.
