A teacher in the Belgian city of Molenbeek has been suspended after showing an illustration of the Prophet Muhammad explaining the murder of a French teacher who used the same image, a spokesman for the mayor announced last night (Friday).

The teacher showed one of the illustrations published by the French magazine Charlie Bedouin during the lesson on the death of Samuel Patti.

"The decision was made because these are blatant illustrations. Even if the prophet had not appeared in them, we would have done the same," a spokesman for the Molenbeek mayor said.

He added that in the illustration in question, the Prophet appeared naked, even though the students were ten and 11 years old.

"Two or three parents complained," he said.

Belgium, France's neighbor, has also experienced several terrorist attacks in recent years and the town of Molenbeek, home to a large Muslim population, has become known as a center of radical Islam.

A spokesman for the mayor stressed that the suspension is not a punishment, but is intended to maintain proper order during a disciplinary procedure, after which the teacher may face administrative measures.

The French teacher was murdered and beheaded about two weeks ago in a suburb near Paris, by 18-year-old radical Chechen, after showing the illustrations to the classroom while teaching about freedom of expression.

Many Muslims refer to any painting of the Prophet as desecration and illustration as an attack on their faith.

Against the magazine that originally published the photos, Shirley Bedouin, a terrorist attack was carried out in 2015 in which 12 people were killed.

Following the assassination of 47-year-old Patti, French President Emmanuel Macron has firmly defended freedom of expression, including Meyer's right to paint religious figures.
