The three CDU presidency candidates have agreed to resolve the party's leadership issue at a party conference in mid-January.
This was announced by General Secretary Paul Ziemiak on Saturday evening on Twitter.
Friedrich Merz's team confirmed the agreement to SPIEGEL.
"The candidates prefer a central presence party conference," wrote Ziemiak.
"If that and a decentralized presence party conference should not be possible, they plead for an online party conference with digital election of the federal executive committee."
Armin Laschet, Friedrich Merz and Norbert Röttgen had therefore agreed to ask the federal board to move the event to the new date.
Previously, there had been consultations between the candidates and the current party chairman Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer.
"I am very happy that the candidates are sending this strong sign of unity," wrote Ziemiak.
The three applicants had recently had a heated discussion about the party conference.
