Lufthansa has to tighten its austerity course because of the corona pandemic.
This also affects the Munich location.
The corona pandemic has caused
turbulence for
Lufthansa
.
In the first nine months, the company
piled up
a
loss
of 4.1 billion euros.
Now the airline is feverishly looking for ways to
save
.
Munich - The crisis-ridden
Lufthansa is
temporarily
relocating
eight Airbus A 350 from
Munich
to
Frankfurt
.
The long-haul machines would be used on the routes from Frankfurt to North America and Asia, a
Lufthansa
spokeswoman told Merkur.de * on Monday.
From November 1st, the
A 350
from Frankfurt would initially
fly
to
Los Angeles
,
Chicago
and
Tokyo
, with other long-distance routes to follow.
The A 350 were "only loaned to Frankfurt", emphasized the spokeswoman.
As soon as the demand picks up again, the machines would be brought back to Munich, it was said.
Lufthansa operates a total of 16 A 350s in Munich, but half of them were recently shut down.
The Airbus models, which are considered to be particularly fuel-efficient, are now to replace the older Boeing 747 and A 340-300s from Frankfurt in the short term.
They consume significantly more fuel than the A 350 and are therefore more expensive to use.
Lufthansa cuts direct connections to Asia and North America
In addition to the temporary relocation of the A 350 to Frankfurt, the airline is also cutting its direct connections in Munich.
With the start of the winter flight schedule last Sunday,
Washington DC
and
Hong Kong would
no longer be served, according to the request.
The direct flights from Munich to
San Francisco
and
Tokyo
would also be temporarily suspended, but should be resumed from the beginning of March.
This also applies to
Beijing
, but the resumption of flight operations still depends on the approval of the Chinese authorities.
The
Lufthansa
suffers similarly to other airlines because of the
Corona
* pandemic under massive travel restrictions, entry bans and lockdown.
From January to September the airline piled up a total of 4.1 billion euros in losses.
This shortfall will "increase significantly in the fourth quarter," warned the airline in an employee circular sent to Merkur.de * on Sunday.

In view of the dramatic development, the group now wants to step on the brakes even more.
With the start of the winter flight schedule, a maximum of a quarter of the previous year's capacities will be offered, the letter says.
Just a few weeks ago,
Lufthansa had
planned to offer at least half of the airports in the previous year in the winter half-year.
Because of the rapidly increasing number of infections and recent travel restrictions, the austerity measures have to be "stepped up again," wrote the management.
Therefore, 125 aircraft that were supposed to take off in winter would be decommissioned again.
