A 70-year-old man was rescued today (Sunday) from one of the buildings that collapsed in western Turkey, about 34 hours after a strong earthquake in the Aegean Sea hit the country and Greece.

The death toll in Izmir, the third largest in Turkey, has risen to at least 49, and about 900 people have been injured.

Two more boys were killed on the Greek island of Samos on Friday and at least 19 others were injured.

The noise, which ranged in intensity from 6.6 to 7.0, was also felt in Istanbul and the Greek capital Athens.

Since Friday, hundreds of aftershocks have been recorded in the area, the epicenter of earthquakes.

The noise caused a mini-tsunami, which flooded parts of Izmir and the island of Samos, north of which was the focus.

Ahmet Chitim, 70, was rescued from the rubble shortly after midnight and taken to a hospital.

"I have never lost hope," said the rescuer, quoted by Health Minister Fahertin Kocha.

Search and rescue teams continued their work on nine buildings that collapsed in Izmir, two days after the disaster.

The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Situations Agency said more than 5,700 people from government agencies, local authorities and NGOs were involved in the rescue operations.

Hundreds of others distribute food, provide psychological help and conduct damage control.

"If they are alive, we have a chance to rescue them within 72 hours," Vice President Poet Octai told reporters.

"Inshallah that it will happen."

Dogs, cats and rabbits were also rescued from the rubble.

After months of tension, Greece and Turkey have exchanged messages of solidarity since the earthquake.

Ankara, which experienced the most damage, thanked foreign countries that offered aid - including Israel - and international organizations.

The earthquake has hit Turkey while it is already groaning under economic recession and the corona plague.

More than ten thousand people have died from the virus in Turkey.

Greece also experienced a renewed outbreak, and it imposed a new partial closure.
