The news could not have come at a worse time.
Actually, Abdelmajid Tebboune wanted to open a new chapter in the history of his country next Sunday.
Citizens are due to vote on a new constitution, which he hopes will give him more legitimacy and give Algeria a golden future.
Then he found out over the weekend that the coronavirus had been detected among his employees.
He went into quarantine and was admitted to a military hospital on Tuesday.
Tebboune is 74 years old, which would be a cause for concern in the midst of a pandemic that has also hit Algeria.
But he is also considered a chain smoker.
A high risk patient.
Before Tebboune came to the hospital, many Algerians had suspected that the vote would be postponed because of Corona.
The government stuck with it.
The citizens should decide on a new constitution on November 1st.
It should be the day of the new beginning.
The date is no coincidence: Algeria's war of independence against France began on November 1, 1954.
