Armenia accused the Azerbaijani army on Monday (November 2nd) of bombing its territory, killing one civilian and wounding two while raising fears of a further escalation of the conflict in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Today, the Azerbaijani side carried out artillery fire on the positions of the Armenian armed forces and the town of Davit Bek,

" Armenian defense ministry spokeswoman Shushan Stepanian wrote on Twitter.

Davit Bek is located one kilometer from the border between Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh, recognized by the international community as part of Azerbaijan.

Heavy fighting has been pitting Azerbaijani troops against the soldiers of the self-proclaimed Nagorny Karabakh republic, supported by Armenia, for more than a month.

Since the resumption of hostilities, the Azerbaijani forces have reconquered territories that had escaped their control since the 1990s and a war that left 30,000 dead, leading to the secession of Nagorny Karabakh, now populated almost exclusively by Armenians.

According to partial reports, these clashes, the worst in nearly thirty years, have left more than 1,250 dead but the number of victims is probably much higher.

So far, three attempts at a humanitarian truce have been shattered.

"Indiscriminate" attacks against civilians

Faced with Azerbaijani advances, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pachinian on Saturday asked for Russian help to ensure his "

security

".

Moscow, linked to Yerevan by a military treaty and having a base in Armenia, replied that it was ready to provide "

all the assistance necessary if the clashes take place directly on the territory of Armenia

".

Azerbaijan has already bombed military positions deployed on Armenian territory in mid-October which, according to Baku, are used to target Azerbaijan.

Baku has also repeatedly accused Armenia of targeting populated areas, a bombing of the city of Barda at the end of October, including the death of 21 people.

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet on Monday raised the possibility that war crimes were committed in Nagorno Karabakh due to “

indiscriminate

attacks

against civilian populations.
