The city temple in the center of Vienna is one of the most important points of contact for the Jewish community in the Austrian capital.
There have been terrorist attacks on the synagogue in the past.
The city temple is located on Seitenstettengasse in the center of Vienna's city center.
The synagogue has been one of the most important Jewish institutions since the 19th century.
There were terrorist attacks on the prayer house as early as 1979 and 1981.
Vienna - The
City Temple
is one of the most important contact points for Jewish residents in
Vienna
.
Especially because of its central location in the 1st district of the Austrian capital.
It used to be quite common for there to be many
synagogues
and
prayer rooms
in the immediate vicinity, so before 1938 the facilities were named after the streets or alleys.
The
city temple
has been in
Seitenstettengasse
since the 19th century
, which is why it is also called the
"Seitenstetten
temple "
.
The Jewish
city temple
was built by Josef Kornhausel in 1825 and 1826.
At that time he was considered to be the most important architect of Viennese Biedermeier and also designed the interior furnishings and cultural equipment.
The
synagogue
, which is still located between residential buildings, was fitted into a block of flats at the time, as only Catholic places of worship were allowed to stand directly on the street.
Due to this location, the
Seitenstettentempel
was the only one of Vienna's 94 Jewish
synagogues
and
prayer houses
to survive the November 1938 Nazi program unscathed.
In the
city temple
, a memorial by architect Thomas Feiger has been commemorating the time of National Socialism since 2002.
It is supposed
to save the
65,000 murdered Austrian
Jews
, whose names are engraved on rotating slates, from being forgotten.

In the past, the
synagogue
in
Seitenstettengasse was
already the target of
terrorist attacks
.
On April 22, 1979, half a kilogram of plastic explosives exploded in the courtyard.
Fortunately, there was “only” major damage to property, nobody was injured at the time.
In August 1981, a Palestinian extremist group also carried out an
attack
on the
synagogue
.
Two dead and 21 partly seriously injured was the sad result.
The
assassins broke
into the
synagogue
during a service
, threw hand grenades and fired into the crowd.
In response, the
city temple has been
secured and protected by the police around the clock to this day.

The history of the city of
Vienna
is inextricably linked with
Judaism
.
Until 1938 the capital of Austria had a thriving
Jewish community
with dozen
synagogues
and
prayer houses
.
Including the
city temple
in
Seitenstettengasse
.
The situation changed fundamentally after the occupation of Austria by the German Wehrmacht in March 1938. A total of 140,000 Austrians had to flee their homeland “for racist reasons”.
Among them Sigmund Freud, who emigrated to England.
65,000 people who could not leave the country were murdered by the Nazis.
