After the terrorist attack on Monday evening, there is a large-scale police operation in Vienna.
What is known so far:
Around 8 p.m., numerous
emergency calls reached
the Vienna police: shooting was taking place in the city center.
The police have now confirmed that there are
at least six crime scenes
, all in the center.
The first thing that was shot was near the synagogue in Seitenstettengasse, and a police officer was seriously injured, said Austrian Interior Minister Karl Nehammer.
The shootings then moved to the city center.
In total, the Viennese emergency services and the mayor of Vienna report
15 injured people
who are currently being treated in the city's hospitals.
Seven of them were seriously injured, including the policeman;
a passerby was murdered by the perpetrators.
The police
shot and killed an assassin
, and further suspected terrorists are being searched for.
Mayor Michael Ludwig said it is currently being investigated whether the dead attacker is wearing an explosive belt.
A rifle was found on him.
Nothing is known about
the
motive of the perpetrators
.
The synagogue was already closed at the time of the attack.
Mayor Ludwig said that the nearby nightlife area, the so-called "Bermuda Triangle", could possibly have been the target: "People were shot at random at people in the bars".
The Viennese police asked
for support from
the Austrian
Armed Forces
.
In the coming hours, the soldiers will take over the security of the property in Vienna from the police so that the police can concentrate on the hunt for the other perpetrators.
Chancellor Sebastian Kurz spoke in a tweet of a "disgusting terrorist attack".
Kurz announced that the police would act decisively against the perpetrators.
"We are currently experiencing difficult times in our republic."
The whole country is in thought with the victims, injured and their families.
