The governor of San Juan, Sergio Uñac, considered it "opportune" to suspend the
Legislative
primary elections
next year, arguing that the measure "would mean less health risk and greater economic savings."
"Taking into account the 2021 Legislative Elections, and respecting the constitutional mandates and the replacement of the authorities elected by popular vote, I
consider it appropriate
that the suspension of the STEP established by Law No. 26,571 be evaluated," he wrote this Monday on his Twitter account .
The president requested "dialogue and joint work with the political sectors to generate consensus necessary to present a Bill for the suspension of the PASO for the year 2021."

He is the first governor to publicly ask to suspend the PASO, an idea that the Government manages due to the
economic crisis,
since
the primaries will cost an estimated $ 12 billion.
Another question that drives the possible suspension is the
pandemic
, since even if the vaccine is approved, the process, until it covers most of the population, will take months.
The internal party mechanism, which Kirchnerism itself implemented in 2011, would be postponed under the argument that, as it will continue to live under
the risk of the contagion
of coronavirus, it would be - they say in the Casa Rosada -
"nonsense" to mobilize millions of Argentines
on two occasions: both for the PASO and for the subsequent general election.
To this, it would be added that, even under the impact of an increasingly serious economic and social crisis, it could want to justify
saving billions of pesos
in an internal election.
This newspaper had already advanced the official plans in May.
Referents of Together for Change questioned the possibility of the Government moving forward without consensus or with the accompaniment of some allies.
They considered it a "change in the rules of the game" of the electoral system, which in case of materialization will be "unilateral" and for "political convenience."
The suspension of the PASO cannot be done through a DNU but
only by law
.
In its article 77, the National Constitution also establishes that "bills that modify the electoral regime and those of political parties must be approved by an absolute majority of the total of the members of the Chambers" of Congress.

In the Senate, the ruling party has that special guaranteed majority (it has 42 senators and needs 37);
in Deputies it has 119 legislators of its own and the possibility of approving the eventual law is almost within reach (it needs 129).
The PASO could be a great computer for JxC, where they sound like possible candidates in the City Patricia Bullrich, as well as the minister Fernán Quirós.
And for the province of Buenos Aires, in addition to the feasibility of Elisa Carrió, the former governor María Eugenia Vidal is mentioned as Miguel Angel Pichetto.
On the side of the Frente de Todos, no names of relevance appear for the 2021 fight. Both the members of the presidential duo and the parliamentary referents of the government force (Sergio Massa and Máximo Kirchner) will not participate in the electoral bid.
In Casa Rosada, today it is said that "the candidate will be the Government."
