Today, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson defended his decision to impose a new lockdown in the country to contain a second wave of the emerging corona virus, considering that it is correct to try all possible options to control this virus at the local level.
"AFP" quoted Johnson as saying before the House of Commons that scientific models show that if the necessary measures are not taken to deal with the virus, the death toll in the winter could reach double what was recorded in the first outbreak, warning that hospitals will soon reach their maximum capacity.
For his part, the head of the opposition Labor Party, Keir Starmer, described Johnson's performance as a "catastrophic failure", but he did not express "any regret" for his refusal over weeks to impose a new lockdown due to its repercussions on lifestyle, mental health and livelihood.
The tightening of measures to address the Covid 19 pandemic came after Britain crossed the one million infections and recorded about 22,000 additional infections last Saturday, while the death toll reached 74,000, the highest in Europe.
Johnson announced on the thirty-first of last month the imposition of a general closure in Britain, starting from next Thursday, after the existing restrictions failed to prevent the increase in the number of cases of Covid 19.
