Trump is considering dismissing disease expert Fauci

9.30 a.m.:

US President Donald Trump has publicly promised the dismissal of US disease expert Anthony Fauci.

At an election rally in Florida over the weekend, Trump was defending his corona policy when the crowd began to chant "Throw Fauci out".

To which Trump replied: "Don't tell anyone, but let me wait until shortly after the election."

The US presidential election will take place on Tuesday.

The immunologist Fauci, chief adviser to the president in the corona crisis, has contradicted Trump several times since the beginning of the pandemic and in particular criticized Trump's statement that the US had the worst behind it.

The country is still facing a lot of suffering, he said on Friday in the Washington Post.

All the signs were pointing in the wrong direction.

"You can't be in a much worse position."

The United States is hardest hit by the pandemic in terms of both infection and death worldwide.

Press: Trump could declare himself the election winner before the final result

9 a.m.:

US President Donald Trump allegedly plans to declare himself the winner in the event of a lead on the night of the US election before the end of the vote count.

The news site "Axios" reported on Sunday, citing three unnamed sources, that Trump had discussed plans with confidants.

Because of the pandemic, a record number of postal voters is expected.

According to surveys, supporters of the Democrat Joe Biden want to make use of it.

In competitive states like Pennsylvania, postal votes can be counted days after the election.

This could mean that Trump is ahead in the Wednesday night election, but his lead turns into defeat in the days after.

Then the electorate in the states in which the result turns would not be awarded to Trump, but to Biden.

That could be decisive if the result is close - the winner needs at least 270 of the 538 electorate from the states.

During an election campaign appearance in Dubuque, Iowa on Sunday, Trump again demanded that an election result must be available on Wednesday night.

"It has always been like that, and that's how it should be."

Trump has been claiming for months, without any evidence, that postal voting encourages fraud.

In the opinion of critics, he is preparing the ground for doubting the result in the event of a defeat.

Axios said Trump's team is preparing to make an unfounded claim that the Democrats "stole" the election if the Pennsylvania result turned in Biden's favor after election night.

Trump campaign advisor Jason Miller also accused the Democrats on Sunday of wanting to "steal" an election victory after the election.

Economist Fratzscher worries about the German economy

7:25 a.m.:

DIW boss Marcel Fratzscher is more concerned about the German economy than the US economy in the event of President Donald Trump's second term in office.

"I am concerned that Germany has more to lose economically than the US under President Trump," said the President of the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) of the German Press Agency.

"If Trump wins the election, democracy in the US will be damaged, as will multilateralism. Economically, however, I am less worried in the medium term."

The US economy will continue to be very dynamic.

From Fratzscher's point of view, Europe is not able to act enough.

"We do not have a common voice and there is no driving force that can assert itself against the USA and China," said the DIW President.

"The US and China are becoming increasingly nationalistic and there is a risk that Europe will fall behind."

If the Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden wins the election, Fratzscher expects a change of course in US domestic politics.

"Biden will try to reduce the divisions in society."

A lot could also change internationally.

"On a global level, Biden should fix a few things, for example the US position on the Paris climate protection agreement."

At the same time, Fratzscher dampened expectations that the US under Biden would be more committed to international cooperation and multilateral agreements.

"We shouldn't expect the US to take on the role of the driver of multilateralism under Biden."
