(CNN) -

Vienna police are responding to an alleged "terrorist attack" with multiple suspects, Austrian Interior Minister Karl Nehammer said.

The situation is still developing and the population is urged to stay indoors while the police try to find the attackers, the minister added.

Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig said 15 people were injured, including seven seriously.

Gunfire broke out in the Austrian capital on Monday night.

"All possible forces" are responding to the incident, according to police.

Agents urge people to avoid the area and not share photos or videos on social media.

"Shooting in the Inner City district - people are injured - STAY AWAY from all public places or public transport - do not share any videos or photos!" Austrian police said on Twitter.

The area where the shooting took place in Vienna is a busy district full of bars and restaurants, near Vienna's main synagogue, the Seitenstettengasse temple.

Oskar Deutsch, head of Vienna's Jewish community, said in a tweet that it was unclear whether the synagogue was a target.

And he clarified that it was closed at the time of the shooting.

This story is in development.

Simon Cullen, Fred Pleitgen, and Tim Lister contributed to this report.
