Six years after losing control of the Senate, Democrats hope to regain the majority during the election.

In addition to the president, the fate of the upper house of Congress, which has the authority, among other things, to approve candidates for the court and members of the government, will also be decided.

Republicans now hold a 53-to-47 majority, and Democrats will have to win four or three seats, in case Joe Biden defeats President Donald Trump.

This is because in such a case Vice President Kamla Harris could break the tie.

35 seats out of a hundred are up for election today (Tuesday), and out of them some races are expected to be close.

Polls predict Democrats have a chance for a revolution, but it will not be easy.

In addition, elections will be held for all 435 seats of the House of Representatives, whose members are up for election every two years.

Democrats are expected to retain a majority, and the next election in 2022 will already be based on the new census conducted this year.

Unlike the Senate, where each state gets two seats regardless of its size, in the House of Representatives the number of seats depends on the number of residents in the state.

Elections will also be held for some positions of governors, prosecutors general and other federal and state officials.

Some countries hold referendums on various issues.

The leading races to the Senate

In

Arizona

, former Democrat astronaut Mark Kelly leads the polls by a gap based on incumbent Republican Sen. Martha Maxali, after raising more money during the campaign.

Kelly, who is running for the vacant seat of the late Senator John McCain, is married to Giffords, a former Democratic congresswoman who was seriously injured in a 2011 shooting attack.

He has since become a supporter of tighter arms control.

North Carolina

The race in the country is expected to be the most costly in the history of the Senate election, with incumbent Republican Tom Tilis close to his Democratic opponent Cal Cunningham.

The latter, who was a member of the state Senate and fought in the Iraq war, got involved in a sex affair but remained in the game after his opponent was diagnosed as positive for the corona virus.

He became infected after attending a White House mass infection event in which Judge Amy Connie Barrett's candidacy was revealed to the Supreme Court.

Recent polls show that Biden and Cunningham are leading by a small margin in the country.

Colorado

The seat occupied by Republican Corey Gardner is expected to return to Democrats, given President Trump's unpopularity in the country, which has not elected a Republican presidential candidate since 2004. Opposite Gardner is former state Gov. John Hickenlooper, who ran briefly in Democratic primaries earlier this year.

Alabama

In 2017, Democratic Doug Jones managed to win a seat in the Senate on behalf of the Conservative state, the first in a quarter of a century.

However, three years since his surprise victory, he is lagging behind in the polls by a double-digit margin from Republican candidate Tommy Tuberville, who was previously a football coach.

Veteran Republican Sen. Susan Collins, who said in 2016 she would not vote for Trump, faces a possible loss.

The chairman of the Maine House of Representatives, Democrat Sarah Gideon, leads by a small margin in the polls. She was the only Republican senator to vote against the appointment of Judge Connie Barrett last month.

Georgia

In a country that until recently was considered a Republican stronghold, there is a close battle between incumbent Senator David Pardo and his Democratic opponent John Usoff, a former journalist.

Due to the competition of a third candidate in the race, the two may be required for a second round if neither of them reaches 50% or more.
