The Astor Piazzolla Foundation and the National Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts reached an agreement regarding the name that the awards will have at the next edition of
the Mar del Plata International Film Festival
.
There was a controversy arising from unofficial versions, which ensured that the awards would stop being called Astor, in honor of Astor Piazzolla from Mar del Plata, to be called Lobo in reference to the marine animals characteristic of the city.
INCAA issued a statement in this regard, which reads as follows:
This is the statuette that was awarded, until last year's edition, of the Astor Prize at the Mar del Plata Festival.

"Today (Tuesday, November 3), the Astor Piazzolla Foundation and the National Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts (INCAA) signed a document endorsed by the highest authorities of the municipality of General Pueyrredón, in order to inform , by common agreement, that from the 35th edition of the Mar del Plata International Festival, which will take place virtually from November 21 to 29, 2020, the prizes to be awarded at the festival will be called 'Astor Piazzolla'. "
“This change, on the eve of the centenary of our beloved artist, born in Mar del Plata on March 11, 1921, is based on the certainty that his transcendence is and must be universal.
That this award bears his name and surname, widely recognized throughout the world, is a fair tribute to his enormous work and to his unique career as a composer, arranger, conductor ... and bandoneon player. "
The jury of the International Competition of the Mar del Plata Festival in 2019, awards the Golden Astor for the best film to "O que arde".
"The Astor Piazzolla Prize will consist of a bandoneon played by another great, the goldsmith Juan Carlos Pallarols. And the 36/2021 edition of the Mar del Plata International Festival will show films from all over the world enriched by Piazzolla's talent, and will publish a book on his music in the cinema and we do not rule out that by crowning the Piazzolla Year, we can announce what we did not achieve this year: the creation of the 'Astor Piazzolla' Special Award for musical excellence in cinema. "

Astor Piazzolla Foundation
had published a text on its social networks in which they described the change as "unfortunate (and little thought)".
Although they clarified that they did not intend to perpetuate "the name Astor to refer to said award", they reminded the authorities of the National Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts (INCAA) of the trajectory linked to the cinema of the world famous composer.
Since 2004, when the filmmaker Miguel Pereira took over as artistic director of the Festival, the awards are called Astor.
In 1996, when the Festival was resumed after having been suspended since 1970, it was decided that the awards would be called Ombú.
