The police in Uganda have temporarily arrested pop star and opposition politician Bobi Wine.

Wine wants to compete against long-term president Yoweri Museveni in the February 2021 election.

As the German press agency claims to have found out, Wine's candidacy was approved shortly before the arrest.

Meanwhile, Wine has been released, according to the news agency.

Up to 50 of his supporters were also arrested, others were injured.

Shortly before his arrest, the 38-year-old opposition politician had warned Museveni against manipulating the presidential election next year.

"We know that Museveni is proud to have rigged elections," Wine told supporters after his candidacy was approved.

TV pictures showed how Wine was dragged out of a car by security forces a little later.

In the February election, Wine is considered the most promising challenger to Museveni.

Museveni was once considered a beacon of hope

Museveni (76) has been in power in the East African country since 1986.

For a long time he was considered a bearer of hope.

But it is the younger generation in particular who today criticize corruption and ineffective governance and demand changes.

Museveni should not have been allowed to run again after his current fifth term.

But in 2017, despite sharp criticism from opposition members, parliament abolished the age limit of 75 years for heads of state with a constitutional amendment.

This could keep him in power until 2030.
