US election 2020: more than 100 million early voters

Because of the corona pandemic, the number of early voters in the USA is skyrocketing. In some states, more citizens voted before election day than the total number of votes cast in 2016.

In the US presidential election a record number of more than 100 million people voted before the actual election day on November 3rd.

This figure already corresponds to more than 73 percent of all votes that were cast in the 2016 election, reported the "US Elections Project".

Voter turnout was particularly high in a number of states in the south and west.

In Texas, Washington State, Oregon and Hawaii, the number of early voters exceeded the total number of votes cast in 2016.

One of the main reasons for the increase in early voters is the corona pandemic, as people wanted to avoid the risk of infection in polling stations by voting by post.

In addition to postal voters, early voters include so-called

early

voters

, who cast their votes in person at a polling station.

In many places there have been long queues in the past weeks and days.

It is believed that a majority of early voters are more likely to support Democratic challenger Joe Biden.

The official announcement of the election results can take time because in many states it can take days for the votes of the early voters to be counted.

It is therefore possible that incumbent Donald Trump will be better off right after election night than at the end of the entire count.

The Republican had repeatedly associated postal voting, in particular, with fraud.

However, this has been refuted beyond any doubt.

Trump is behind his Democratic challenger Joe Biden in polls both nationwide and in several "swing states".
