The accusation, which suspended Pérez from his duties, was approved with 80 votes in favor and 74 against.

It also had to continue its proceedings in the Senate.

In explaining his resignation, Pérez defined the measure of the Chamber of Deputies as "an attack to obstruct the action of the government."

Therefore, he said that he did not want to be an obstacle and that is why he raised the possibility of resigning with the president.

"And even though he tried to persuade me," said the now former minister, "he accepted my arguments because, clearly, we all fully understand that the purpose is not Víctor Pérez, but the government of President Piñera."

The constitutional accusation was promoted by opposition parliamentarians.

And he alluded to "an excessive tolerance for the acts of road blockades" during a stoppage of truckers in Chile.

They also accuse him of reacting late in the case of a 16-year-old boy who was pushed by a policeman from a bridge during a protest.

By accepting his resignation, Piñera said that he reaffirmed his conviction that Pérez "has fulfilled all his duties, has respected the Constitution and the laws, and has not incurred any grounds for constitutional accusation."

For which he hoped that "the honorable senators reject the accusation."

In replacement of Pérez, Piñera announced the appointment of Juan Francisco Galli as interim minister of the Interior.

Galli was undersecretary of the same portfolio.
