Cairo-Sana

Egypt announced today the end of the Renaissance Dam meetings without consensus on the methodology for negotiations.

A statement issued by the Egyptian Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation regarding the meeting of water ministers in Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia to discuss the optimal framework for managing the ongoing negotiations under the auspices of the African Union, according to what was reported by the Seventh Day website, “It became clear during the discussions that the three countries did not agree on the methodology for completing negotiations in the next phase. The three countries agreed that each of them would submit a report to South Africa as the current chair of the African Union.

The report includes the proceedings of the meetings and their vision on ways to implement the outputs of the two African Union Bureau’s meetings at the summit level, which were held on June 26 and July 21, and which recognized that the three countries conclude a binding legal agreement on filling and operating the Renaissance Dam.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry had warned at the end of last June about the dangers and repercussions of filling the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam unilaterally and without agreement with Egypt and Sudan, stressing that this represented a serious threat to international peace and security.
