Those who longed for a quick, clear result were disappointed by that fateful November 3 and the following night - America did not make the choice between Joe Biden and Donald Trump in the battle for the White House easy.
It was an assault on the nerves, Trump would also have wanted to end the counting of millions of votes early when he was ahead in some states.
More people have already voted for him than in 2016, and that will also be discussed.
Well over 100 million citizens cast their vote and participation is approaching top values, at least that is good news.
SPIEGEL reporters were out and about in the electoral states: Florida, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Georgia, Washington and elsewhere.
They tell how Americans look at this election - and how an entire country remains in a mixture of hope, anger and fear.
Monday, Detroit, Michigan, 4:30 p.m. local time
A small stage has been set up in Krainz Park in Detroit, with around forty people waiting in front of it.
"State of Emergency Vote Tour" is written on a bus.
The organizers, mostly liberal and Afro-American activists, want to encourage black Americans to vote.
They have been driving across the country for weeks, they have been to Florida, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.
Linda Sarsour is one of the organizers, she wants something to change, she wants Donald Trump to be voted out of office.
They must have an interest in Joe Biden winning, actually.
But she says about Biden: "I'm not that enthusiastic."
Sarsour longs for a time when other candidates have the chance to become president, not just an old white man.
She thinks what many in the country who want to vote against Trump think shortly before the election: Biden is just a means to an end.
