US presidential election: those states where results are still awaited

2020-11-04T13:54:09.899Z

Eight states have not yet finished counting their ballots, including several "pivot states", where the gap could be very close between Democrats and Republicans.

The fate of the US presidential election now depends on eight states.

Alaska, Arizona, North Carolina, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin have not yet finished counting their ballots.

In these states, the count was interrupted or delayed, and could continue on Wednesday, November 4, or even over several days, in particular because of the record level of postal votes.

Wednesday at noon, French time, Joe Biden could count on 238 large voters;

Donald Trump, out of 213. The outcome of the ballot remains undecided, however.

One certainty: the announced democratic wave did not take place.

The outgoing president has retained Florida, lying many polls, as well as Texas and Ohio.

To clinch victory, his rival must win at least two of the three disputed industrial north states - Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin.

Wisconsin

Joe Biden

is currently at the advantage in this state, with 20,748 votes away from his rival at 2 p.m. French time on Wednesday.

There remained 173,000 votes to count or 5% of the ballots in total,

according to The Guardian

The result is particularly scrutinized in this state which voted for the Democratic candidate in all the presidential elections from 1988 to 2012, but always with very little difference.

Above all, in 2016, Trump had succeeded in winning in Wisconsin, despite the forecasts of the polling institutes.

Pennsylvania

The wait could be particularly long to know the final result in this state, which accepts votes until several days after the poll, some local correspondents even bringing forward the date of November 9.

For the time being, 36% of the ballots remain to be counted, that is to say a little less than 3 million votes.

Trump

is ahead, for now, with 675,000 votes difference, reports

The Guardian.

The vote is particularly eagerly awaited in Pennsylvania, which was one of the biggest key states to win Trump in 2016, by a margin of just 0.7 points.

This state, on working-class land, had then become republican for the first time since 1992.

Michigan

The wait should also be prolonged in this state: the final result could have to wait until this Friday, according to a reporter from Bloomberg.

Trump

is currently in the lead at 2 p.m., but with only 13,000 gap ballots.

Its lead has been shrinking since Wednesday morning.

There are still some 540,000 votes to count.

Michigan's electoral pattern largely resembles that of Pennsylvania: many voters who leaned in favor of Ronald Reagan in 1984 switched back to the Democrats, who have since consistently won that state in every presidential election between 1992 and 2012. But in 2016, Trump had won by just 0.2 point difference - the smallest difference in any state.

Nevada

Nevada could be one of the last states to report the outcome of the poll.

He will accept ballots until November 10, one week after the official vote date.

At midday this Wednesday, there were still 589,000 ballots to count.

Joe Biden

is currently at the advantage in this state, but with only 7,647 votes apart.

A traditional swing state, Nevada has one of the most diverse populations in the country, especially in the Las Vegas area, where its inhabitants are concentrated.

The Hispanic community largely favors Joe Biden, but Trump has gained ground there since 2016, when Nevada was won with a very small difference by Hillary Clinton (+ 2.4 percentage points).

Donald Trump's campaign team is currently suing the Democrat-ruled state in an attempt to revoke a law to facilitate mail-in voting.

An attempt blocked by a court of first instance and even contested by the Secretary of State of Nevada, yet Republican.

Arizona

In Arizona, nearly 84% of the votes were counted.

The gap is very tight but it is

Joe Biden

who leads with 51% of the vote against 47.6% for Donald Trump.

The last time that state voted for a Democratic president was in 1996. But the rise of a Hispanic electorate in recent years has made the outcome more uncertain.

Democrats managed to win a number of seats in the midterms elections in 2018.

North Carolina

In North Carolina, there are still 348,000 ballots to count, or 6% of the total votes in that state.

Trump

remains in the lead for now, with 76,712 votes ahead of Biden.

Since 1968, this state has voted only twice for a Democratic Party candidate, including Barack Obama in 2008. But since then, the gap between Democrats and Republicans has tended to narrow with the diversification of the population, and especially with the arrival of voters from Democratic States.

Almost four in 10 residents are from ethnic communities, and of that number, more than half are African Americans.

Cities in North Carolina are more likely to vote Democrats, while rural areas vote for Republicans.

Georgia

This state also still has 6% of the votes to count, or 300,000 ballots.

Trump

is largely leading the race this time with 102,823 votes ahead of his rival.

Georgia has voted Republican in eight of the last nine presidential elections.

A Democratic victory is therefore far from being achieved, but this state remains considered a "swing state".

In the 2018 midterm election, Democratic candidate for governor Stacey Abrams finished one point behind her Republican rival.

Alaska

The wait will also be extended in Alaska, the last state to vote, where there were still 57% of the ballots (or 207,000 votes) to be counted this Wednesday noon.

Trump

leads the way, with 46,553 votes ahead.

This state is predominantly libertarian, a political tendency that usually chooses Republicans for the presidential election.
