Yannick Jadot: managing the health crisis "puts us all in danger"

2020-11-04T16:29:46.484Z

The former EELV leader in the European elections is challenging the government's too vertical and technocratic approach to the epidemic.

Green MEP Yannick Jadot calls for the establishment of two security councils on the health crisis and terrorism as well as the reopening of local shops.

What lessons do you draw from the American election?

YANNICK JADOT.

At this time, there is no winner, and the risks of institutional instability and civil clashes are very worrying.

Yet, we need the United States to ease global tensions, fight for climate and health, against terrorism and inequality.

But the mobilization for Trump must alert us to the urgency to get out of the inter-self and to stem territorial, economic, social and cultural relegations.

How do you judge the management by the executive of health, economic and security crises?

These crises are dramatic and affect all countries.

But the vertical and technocratic management of our country, where the president decides alone with a few advisers, is catastrophic.

Parliament, local elected officials, the country's vital forces are at best informed of decisions a few hours before they are announced on TV.

The French are infantilized and made to feel guilty.

If we add to this the succession of measures and states of emergency, without coherence or anticipation while the crisis is taking hold, the hiccups, the invectives and the loss of composure of the government, it becomes obvious that this management method puts us all in danger, that it produces mistrust and undermines the legitimacy of the common rule.

What do you propose ?

I have been calling for the establishment of two security councils for months, one on the health crisis, the other on the fight against terrorism.

These bodies would associate political forces and social partners with ministers and experts.

They would make it possible, because there are many uncertainties, to build a real collective intelligence while strengthening the effectiveness of collective action.

It is imperative to give a perspective, a hope, to the French, if we want to maintain the unity of the country.

By redefining, the executive is making health its priority.

Should you be satisfied?

This reconfinement was unfortunately inevitable.

I call on all French people to strictly respect the rules.

And this, especially since the government has sometimes failed in the fight against the spread of the virus and in strengthening our resuscitation capacities.

Let us remember Jean Castex, so proud to claim that he had organized this failed deconfinement with twenty technos in his office!

Do you support the rebellion of small traders?

I share the incomprehension of traders in the face of absurd decisions that concern them and lead many of them to bankruptcy.

But disobedience is not the solution.

I ask the President of the Republic to quickly reopen local shops, obviously under strict health protocol.

Reconfinement: "We will not go back on the measures announced", warns Jean Castex

What did you think of Emmanuel Macron's interview on Al-Jazeera?

It is essential to firmly and pedagogically defend freedom of expression and the values of the Republic.

I am scandalized by these leaders who have called for a boycott of French products while we are undergoing abominable attacks.

These leaders do not defend Muslims.

Otherwise, they would call for a boycott of Chinese products to protect the Uyghurs.

For them, it is our freedoms that are blasphemous!

In the fight against terrorism, are you, like some on the right, in favor of challenging the rule of law?

Our only compass must be efficiency.

We have practically one law a year on terrorism.

Let's implement them and ask ourselves about the shortcomings which are often human, especially in territorial intelligence or on the Pharos Internet alert platform.

If there are legal loopholes identified, of course let's legislate.

It is also a major issue for European cooperation.

What flaws?

I am thinking in particular of the Internet, where radical Islamism is proliferating.

We must give ourselves all the legal and ideological means to fight and defeat it.

Terrorism, reconfinement, diplomatic crisis ... in the head of Emmanuel Macron

You weren't at the March Against Islamophobia.

But the Greens are not all clear on secularism ...

Environmentalists are attached to secularism and to the Republic. If there have been individual complacencies, they must definitely cease. We must continue to assert intransigence and a merciless fight against radical Islamism. But we must also keep the Republican promise of equality. Islamism is progressing where the public power has allowed ghettoization, discrimination and the feeling of abandonment to develop, especially among young people. Let us not leave the social to the Salafists. Let us implement the Borloo plan for the suburbs. Let's restore the subsidized jobs, which allowed many secular associations to maintain the link and solidarity in many neighborhoods. It is therefore for a legal, operational, ideological and social rearmament of the Republic that environmentalists are working.
