Joe Biden is currently ahead, but Donald Trump is not yet out of the running in the US presidential election.
Little by little the numbers roll in - we will keep you up to date.
The
US
presidential election
took
place on November 3, 2020
.
Members of the Senate and House of Representatives were also partially or completely redefined.
It is still unclear who will hold the highest office in the USA: continuously updated
live data and maps
.
(see first report)
An analysis of the
voter turnout in the individual states
shows that people in democratic states voted more often.
(see update from November 6th, 12:06 p.m.)
Update from November 6, 12:06 p.m.:
The election thriller for the highest office in the United States is still going on.
The world is excited about the current battleground states.
Joe Biden is currently leading in Arizona, Georgia and Nevada and is therefore ahead in the forecasts.
CNN reports that the Democrat could catch up even in Pennsylvania.
Trump currently leads there with 18,229 votes.
With a count of 95 percent, around 340,000 votes have to be counted there.
A first look at the estimated turnout in the various countries shows that voter turnout tends to be higher in democratic countries.
Most of the
states in which more than
73 percent of
the eligible population cast their votes voted for
Joe Biden
.
Only the states of Iowa and North Carolina fall out of this pattern.
Donald Trump was able to secure Iowa's electors.
In
North Carolina there
is still no final result, but Trump is currently ahead here too.
2020 US election: According to initial estimates, voter turnout is 66 percent
In general, the nationwide
voter turnout
is around
66 percent
.
That should be the highest participation since 1900.
This is what the US Elections Project estimates.
Even more people
voted
in
Maine
*, Minnesota * and Iowa *
.
Here the turnout was around 79 percent.
Eligible voters were least likely in West Virginia, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.
There, less than 57 percent of the people who mostly voted for Donald Trump voted.
Update from November 5, 11:45 a.m.:
The US election has still not been decided, but it is now clear that
Joe Biden was
able to win
Wisconsin
* and
Michigan
*.
Thus, he won in two states in which
Donald Trump
still had the majority in 2016.
In Michigan, Biden's lead is relatively clear.
He leads with 50.4 percent, Trump received 48.0 percent of the vote.
In Wisconsin the gap is smaller.
Biden secured 49.4 percent of the vote, Trump received 48.8 percent.
(Data status: November 5th, 10:42 am)
The race in Nevada is even closer.
Joe Biden is
currently
leading
with only 7,647 votes.
It remains to be seen whether that will be enough or whether Biden can expand his lead to win the state.
In the states of Georgia, Arizona, North Carolina and Pennsylvania, the race is particularly close - and therefore not yet decided.
They tend to be
Donald Trump
in Georgia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania ahead.
Biden seems to have better odds in Arizona and Nevada.
(Data status: November 5th, 10:42 am).
Update from November 4, 4:20 p.m.:
Some important states have still not finished counting.
According to
CNN
, most of the votes yet to be counted are postal votes.
Since the states do not all handle their counting in the same way, it may take some time before the results are known.
Since voting envelopes with a postmark on the day of the election but will not be delivered by the post office until afterwards are still valid, it can even take several days for these to be counted.
2020 US election: first estimates expect record turnout
Regardless of this, there is a clear increase in voter turnout compared to the last elections.
While this was around 60 percent in the 2016 US elections, initial estimates assume a turnout of around
66 percent
in this election
.
Update from November 4, 10:56 a.m.:
The
2020 US election
is still in full swing.
A final result is not expected today either.
However, an initial analysis of the post-election surveys already shows that
there are major differences
between the
population groups
and some issues are very polarizing.
When comparing the sexes, it is noticeable that Donald Trump received somewhat more support from men than from women.
According to surveys by
CNN, they were
more likely to
vote
for Joe Biden.
The democratic candidate was also able to assert itself more strongly among young voters.
Support for Donald Trump increased as voters got older.
US election 2020: Biden vs.
Trump - First analysis of exit polls
The biggest difference, however, can be seen between white and black voters.
While 87 percent of black respondents said they voted for Joe Biden, 57 percent of whites said they had put their cross on Donald Trump.
It also shows that the Trump and Biden supporters have huge differences of opinion on some issues.
84 percent
of voters who
do not see
climate change as
a serious problem voted for
Donald Trump
.
A good two thirds of people who see
things
differently supported
Joe Biden
.
When asked if abortion should be legal, it shows that people who
think
abortion legalization is
right voted 72 percent for Joe Biden.
Three quarters of those opposed to abortion voted for the incumbent president.
US election 2020: polarizing issues in exit polls
Differences can also
be observed
in the assessment of the
corona pandemic
.
More than half of the people for whom the rising corona numbers were important in their voting decision voted for
Joe Biden
.
Of those for whom the pandemic didn't matter, 87 percent support Donald Trump.
Even if Joe Biden is
ahead
with
224 voters
so far
in the race for a majority of 270, the result is still open.
To win the election, Biden would also have to win states that Donald Trump was able to secure in 2016.
So far, the Republicans have not yet lost a state to the Democrats (as of 10:53 a.m.).
First report:
Washington - The 46th President is elected in the USA.
It has long been the main choice for the country.
For the
Republicans
, the incumbent President
Donald Trump
*
is
running
for a second term, for the
Democrats
it is
Joe Biden
. * He was Vice President from 2009 to 2017 under former President Barack Obama.
Here you will find current data and graphics - and all live results on today's election evening.
Currently, the map is gradually filling up blue and red - but a decision is far from in sight.
Surveys for the US: Clear numbers, but the choice is far from being decided
Due to the complex electoral system in the USA, the previous
forecasts are
only partially representative.
Because the president is not elected directly by the citizens, but by
electors from the so-called "Electoral College"
.
However, the voters decide on its composition.
America generally has
majority voting
, which means that the winning party in a state wins all of its electors.
How many such delegates a state has at its disposal depends mainly on its population size.
The Electoral College * consists of a total of 538 electors;
a candidate has to unite 270 of them behind him to win the election.
The data shown in the graphics are not based on individual surveys, but on a large number of data sets from the respective states.
These are aggregated, processed and made available in the 270toWin surveys.
In doing so, attention is paid to the distribution of the electors to the respective states in order to ensure greater informative value.
Today's election night, we're continuing the CNN-based graphic and integrating the final election results.
Presidential election: which states could decide the election
California
, as the most populous state, has 55 voters, followed by
Texas
(38),
Florida
and
New York
(29 each).
Despite its status as the largest state in terms of area, Alaska is only allowed to provide three electors due to its small population.
In addition to the 50 states, Washington DC has three electors as the seat of government.
The 23rd Amendment to the United States Constitution governs this exception.
In some states of the USA, the people there are traditionally tied to one of the two parties.
The
forecasts
there are also
relevant
this year
.
For example,
Joe Biden
can
count on victories in California and New York, while
Donald Trump can
count on wins in
the Republican states of Tennesse (11), Alabama and Kentucky (9 each).
The
2020 US election
*
will
probably be decided in the end, however, in the contested, populous states.
The outcome of the election is still open there or there is only a slight tendency in favor of one of the two parties.
These states are known as
"swing states"
and together make up more than half of the electors necessary for victory.
The most important of these swing states will include
Texas
,
Florida
,
Pennsylvania
(20) and
Ohio
(18).
US election 2020: the most important information in a nutshell
The
US
elects its
president
every four years and a candidate can rule for a maximum of two terms.
In addition to the President, the
Vice President
, the
House of Representatives
and a third of the
Senate will also be
re-elected
on November 3rd
, with the election of President not being made by the electors until 41 days later.
The winner will finally
be sworn
in on
January 20, 2021
and will then move into the
White House
on that day
.
So when will the US election results be? * First numbers are expected on November 4th at around 1 a.m. German time.
Who ultimately won shouldn't be clear until five in the morning, German time.

Transparency: Our data, sources and methods
The poll data presented for the US elections goes beyond a single source.
Rather, the 270towin portal condenses numerous data records and weights them.
Nevertheless, the values naturally cannot be compared with a projection.
The interactive voting elements come from the German Press Agency, which permanently updates the data on the basis of CNN and others and which are then automatically integrated into the article.
