Tough sights in the Nagorno-Karabakh region: Huge convoys of refugees were seen today (Sunday) fleeing the capital of the country, Stepankrat, after its power would overthrow the Azeri army managed to capture the second largest city in the region, Shosha, after heavy fighting with the Armenian army.

The fighting was accompanied by unprecedented shelling by Shosha and Westpancert and at least five civilians were killed in the shelling.

Thousands of refugees fled the bombed-out capital in the early hours of the morning after fears arose that the Azeri army would be able to cut off the Lachin Road, which is undermining Armenian autonomy in Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenian territory.

Videos circulated on social media showed huge traffic jams of refugees trying to flee the city.

Alongside this, videos of fighting were uploaded to the network showing forces of the Azeri army, along with tanks and APCs, conducting battles on the streets of the city of Shosha.

For the Amarans it is a severe disaster, after over thirty years of running and self-rule in the region, the possibility that they will have to live under Baku rule is a red line they are unwilling to accept this amid fears of discrimination and harassment by the authorities.

For the Azeris, the conquest of Shosha was an achievement of profound national significance.

Aryeh Gut, a native of Azerbaijan, chairman of the Beit Azerbaijan organization in Israel and a commentator on Azerbaijan affairs, explains to "Israel Today": "For the Azeris, Shosha is like what Jerusalem is for us.

Gutt says that one of the symbols of the Azeri sacrifice in Shosha is a Jewish armored fighter named Albert Agronov, who was killed in 1991 while defending the city and became a national hero in Azerbaijan.

During the fighting, which began in September, close to 2,000 Armenian fighters and apparently hundreds of Azerbaijani military personnel were killed.

The Azeri army has succeeded in gaining an advantage over the Armenians through the use of advanced weapons, many of them made in Israel.
