The Turkish finance minister Berat Albayrak has announced his resignation.

For health reasons, he could no longer serve in the cabinet after five years, said the 42-year-old on Instagram.

Albayrak served as Secretary of the Treasury for two years after serving as Secretary of Energy for three years.

It is so far unclear whether there may be political reasons behind the resignation.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Albayrak's father-in-law, surprisingly dismissed central bank chief Murat Uysal on Saturday and replaced him with former finance minister Naci Agbal.

The Turkish lira has depreciated dramatically in recent months.

On Friday evening, 8.52 lira were traded for one dollar.

Since the beginning of the year, the currency has lost almost 30 percent against the US dollar.

This development is driven by high inflation.

The country's badly melted currency reserves have accelerated the slide.

In addition, Turkey is in a serious economic crisis.
