55 fungus-infested trees on the Isar slope have to be felled.

Pullach
-
State road 2572
between
Grünwald
and
Pullach
is closed during the day for
four days
.
The state building authority has 55 sick and no longer stable
trees
felled.
A
major effort
for man and machine “It's a miracle that this beech tree is still standing,” says Stephan Endriß from the Freising State Building Authority.
The
tree inspector
reaches into the three-finger high open area at the base of a beech tree on the roadside and pulls out a few black crumbs.
"Burn crust fungus - the death sentence for a tree."
The burn crust fungus is one of the most feared, wood-destroying fungi.
It decomposes the roots and the lower part of the trunk.
The problem with this is that the tree initially shows no signs of reduced vitality, but can
topple over
without warning
if there is a corresponding
infestation
.
Between Pullach and Grünwald: Dangerous work in steep terrain
So the beech has to be felled and with it 54 more trees along the
state road 2572
between Grünwald and Pullach.
Because the State Building Authority is responsible for road safety on all federal, state and district roads in the
Munich
district
.
But because the terrain near Grünwald is very steep and the
felling work
is very dangerous, the state building authority closes the road from Monday to Thursday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Tree felling work near Grünwald: State road 2572 closed - fungal attack
It is mainly the ash trees that are no longer roadworthy.
You are
sick with
ash dieback
, which is caused by a fungus introduced from East Asia.
But also a few dead spruce trees are removed.
In addition, the building authority is putting
shrubs
and
bushes
on the cane along the road on the Grünwald side: shrubs such as hazelnuts are sawn off about a hand's width to about 20 centimeters above the ground.
These shrubs will sprout again in the coming year.
In the past, you had to cut down every single tree by hand and laboriously pull it down or up the slope, today highly specialized machines take on these dangerous tasks.
In Grünwald, a so-called felling grab is used on a telescopic arm.
The boom grabs the trunk at a height of about 15 to 20 meters and saws it off there in order to then lay it on the ground.
A work platform is used where the telescopic arm cannot reach or where the stability of the vehicle is no longer guaranteed due to the leverage of the tree, which is attached to the telescopic arm instead of the gripper.
Then the workers cut the tree piece by piece from top to bottom.
Tree felling work on the Isar slope: Search for bat caves and nesting areas
In the course of this year, internal and external experts determined which trees need to be felled.
All trees to be felled were agreed in advance with the lower nature conservation authority of the district.
And immediately before felling, Stephan Endriß checks the trees again for
bat
holes
and
nesting or resting areas.
The employees of the state building authority leave individual trunks and branches.
They serve as a new habitat for insects, spiders and small mammals.
Above all, however, the tree stumps and the rootstock remain in the ground - they stabilize the slope.
The employees of the Riem road maintenance depot use the full closure to carry out minor repair work on the road on the Pullach side.
They mill out damaged areas of the surface course and re-asphalt them, replace signs that no longer reflect sufficiently and remove the vast amounts of leaves that have accumulated along the guardrails and that now prevent rainwater from flowing off.
