The administration of US President Donald Trump is promoting a plan to impose a long list of sanctions on Iran in the ten weeks remaining until his inauguration of Joe Biden as US president on January 20, according to three Israeli and Arab sources familiar with the issue.

The plan is being promoted by the Trump administration in coordination with Israel and the Gulf states, with the aim of making it difficult for Biden to return to the nuclear deal with Tehran.

The US envoy for Iran, Elliott Abrams, arrived in Israel today (Sunday) and met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, along with National Security Adviser Meir Ben Shabbat.

Abrams is also expected to meet with Defense Minister Bnei Gantz and Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi.

Israeli sources said that in consultations between senior Trump administration officials and Netanyahu government officials, there was grave concern that the Biden administration would work to lift much of the sanctions on Iran imposed by the Republican president since the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal.

In this way, the pressure on Iran will be significantly reduced and the chances of negotiating the return of the nuclear agreement will increase.

It is feared that Biden will work to remove a large part of the sanctions on Iran.

The Trump administration - with the encouragement and assistance of part of the Israeli political-security system - has prepared an Iranian "target bank" on which sanctions will be imposed.

Abrams himself said in a closed briefing in recent days that the administration intends to announce weekly sanctions against Tehran every week until January 20, according to sources involved in the details.

Israeli sources indicate that these are sanctions that will not deal with the nuclear field.

This is because there is a good chance that Biden will lift sanctions in this area to allow a return to the 2015 agreement with Iran.

Instead, they will focus on sanctions such as Iranian aid to terrorism, human rights violations and Iran's missile program.

The Trump administration will work to make it harder for him to return to the nuclear deal with Iran.

The assessment of the Trump administration and the Israeli government is that it will be very difficult for them to lift sanctions of this kind, and thus some of the pressure on Iran will be maintained - even if other sanctions are lifted.

In such a situation, it is estimated in Israel, it will be more difficult for the Biden administration to promote a renewed nuclear agreement with the Iranians.

"The goal is to impose as many sanctions on Iran as possible by January 20," said an Israeli source who provided details.

A senior Arab official added that "the goal of the Trump administration is to impose sanctions that Biden will not be able to remove."

Israeli sources claim that the National Security Staff, the Prime Minister's Office and the State Department support the Trump administration's sanctions.

On the other hand, officials in the Ministry of Defense and the IDF expressed reservations about him and noted that Israel must not be perceived as working with the Trump administration to sabotage the Biden administration's plans.

He will arrive in Israel later this month for a visit that will deal with sanctions on Tehran.

After visiting Israel, Abrams will continue to the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia - the two main allies of the Trump administration and of Israel in the fight against Tehran.

Both the Emirates and the Saudis are very concerned about the policy that the Biden administration will adopt on the Iranian issue.

Abrams' arrival in Israel is in preparation for another visit by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

He is expected to arrive in Israel on November 18, and visit several other Gulf countries.

Pompeo's visit will also deal with sanctions that the United States wants to advance in the two months leading up to Biden's entry into the White House.
