The United Arab Emirates announced yesterday (Saturday) the repeal of lenient sentences for murder for family honor and amendment of inheritance laws for residents, as part of a reform of family and private law laws at the Middle East Trade Center.
According to human rights organizations, thousands of women and girls are murdered across the Middle East and South Asia each year by their family members who are outraged at "insulting their dignity."
Motives can include running away from home, befriending men or any other sin that goes against the conservative values they apply to women.
The UAE government has stated its intention to repeal legal clauses, which have allowed judges to impose compassionate sentences in cases involving crimes against family honor.
"These crimes will now be dealt with by the courts as ordinary murder cases," the administration announced.

The residents of the country will also have the right to choose to be tried according to the laws of inheritance in any case they see fit, instead of the Sharia laws - the Islamic religious laws.
Inheritance and divorce arrangements in the UAE and other Gulf states are based on Sharia, although most of the population is based on foreigners.
The arrangements also apply to Dubai, the country's financial and commercial center.
Under Sharia law, the inheritance rate of women is usually half that of men, and they may be derived from land and property inheritance arrangements.
According to the official news agency of the United Arab Emirates, in which the announcement was made, the state will act to drop the criminal charge for acts that do not harm others, such as alcohol consumption and having consensual sex outside of marriage.
The judicial system will be the one to define which acts fall under the category.
The announcement follows the signing of a peace treaty between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, which includes cooperation in various fields, including aviation and commercial investments.
The agreement is expected to bring many Israeli tourists to the Emirates, which has become a military power alongside a destination for vacations and a place to do business.
"Legal reforms are part of efforts to improve legislation and investment in the country, with the aim of formulating 'tolerant principles,'" the government said.
